I would say normally he doesn't get enough term on RFA deals (see Tkachuk, Mangiapane, even Gaudreau). So this Dube contract is kind of a nice surprise in that regard.

So we now have a pretty good picture of the cap situation for this year.
Currently $5.375M available, with 21 players, including Froese and Gawdin.
Add Vladar and it's $4.625
Add Dube and remove Froese and it's $3.075
So if you want to add a player (to replace Gawdin), you have $3.8M
And run with a 22 man roster.

Gonna assume Mackey signs for around $1M.
So just over $2 million in cap space with 12 forwards, 8 defensemen (8th defenseman being Welinski or a signed Stone), 2 goalies.
or ~$2.75M if we roll with 7 defensemen.
At this point, moving Tkachuk out wouldn't open up enough cap space for Eichel. Not sure what other contracts the Flames would be willing to move out.

This is the same term Tkachuk got.
The one thing that is clear is that Treliving loves 6 years as the term for many of his big signings and extensions.
In no order off the top of my head:
Gaudreau, Backlund, Coleman, Markstrom, Giordano, Lindholm, Hanifin, Andersson all signed for 6 years. Only Monahan signed a longer deal at 7 years. Am I missing any?

Great signing. I think Dube has tons of potential and this AVG is only reflective of his current output.

Let's see if he gets out of Sutter's doghouse first.

If you add Mackey, you remove Welinski and his $750k. So he eats up whatever he gets over $750, and I expect that he gets $750. So it's a wash. (and that was my assumption above)
No need at all for 8 defensemen

Here's hoping it works out better than the Bouma Contract. Kidding aside, I think that's a decent contract and that Dube has shown a lot of good flashes. I liked what I saw in terms of speed, his shot, and his play in the offensive zone. He is still quite a bit lost on the defensive side of the puck, but I think he will only get better with Sutter as his coach.

So from that perspective $2.3M makes sense and is below the $100K for every point threshold.
I do like the three year term as well, this could be really good value as soon as next year if he can evolve to become a 40-50 point forward. I thought the Flames would want to go really cheap on a 1 year deal, so like the strategy here to be on some upside.
|
Don't forget he was 4G + 1A = 5P in 10 "playoff" games in the bubble. There's upside there but he'll need to be more consistent, especially under Sutter.

Eichel's salary would be on IR for a few months though

I would have preferred closer to Mangi's current deal, but this is pretty decent.
Go and outplay this one for us Dube!!

Agreed and if Mackey is smart he signs 2 way deal for $750k but I high AHL salary to help ensure he gets the best possible chance to make the team
Love dube on a 3 year deal. If he breaks out that could be a steal of a deal for 2 more years.

A bit higher than I expected, but I like 3 years with team control afterwards. Wonder if there are any clauses ?

Congratulations to Dillon Dube, the Dube family (big shout out of Josh Dube aka ArmaniXTC) as well as my friends @Guitar Shop Gary and @Geordano...the three of us purchased Blasty Dube jerseys from the Flames Store about 4-5 months ago and they are ready for pickup today! What are the odds!

Not sure how a player on a 35 point pace, and a QoC of 90% can be called a 4th liner.

I like him - he’s fast and has a great shot. But this seems high to me. He still has a lot of work to do.
