Canes have re-signed Andrei Svechnikov (8 yrs, $7.75 mil AAV)
https://www.nhl.com/hurricanes/news/...ov/c-326025730
Quote:
Don Waddell, President and General Manager of the National Hockey League's Carolina Hurricanes, today announced that the team has agreed to terms with forward Andrei Svechnikov on an eight-year contract. The deal will pay Svechnikov an average-annual value (AAV) of $7.75 million per season through 2028-29.
"Andrei is one of the cornerstones of this organization, and we are thrilled to reach a long-term commitment to keep him here," said Waddell. "He is one of the brightest rising stars in our sport, and will play a key role in our efforts to bring the Stanley Cup to the Triangle this decade."
Svechnikov, 21, scored 15 goals and added 27 assists (42 points) in 55 regular-season games during his third NHL season in 2020-21. The Barnaul, Russia, native ranked fifth on the team in goals, tied for third in assists, tied for third in points and second in hits (114) for the season. He added eight points (2g, 6a) in 11 Stanley Cup playoff games as the Hurricanes defeated the Nashville Predators in the first round before falling to the eventual Stanley Cup Champion Tampa Bay Lightning.

Looks like the Canes are counting on it based on that contract.
EDIT: Actually it is a pretty good deal

He's already almost PPG, only 21... I think he could easily be outplaying this contract in the last 5-6 years of it, and pretty much fair value now if he continues his current level of play. I would love this deal for Tkachuk, for example.

If he continues his trajectory this will be an excellent deal for the team.

This is the kind of contract I’d expect for Tkachuk or Gaudreau hopefully.

This is where NHL GMs are bad.
You're telling me nobody was willing to give this guy an offer sheet of 5 years x $8.2M at the cost of a 1st, 2nd or 3rd?
No way should a 8 year deal cost less than $8.5M here for Carolina.
This league needs some GMs that actually have the guts to make offer sheets and trades. NHL GMs are so safe and boring.

I expect Gaudreau’s to have a higher AAV. Have to remember that his contract will have to be competitive with what he would get as a UFA next summer. Would love for tkachuk’s contract to be this though… but I doubt it since he has all the leverage in any negotiation next summer. He knows he can play one year at $9 million and then get an even bigger payday as a UFA.

I suspect it is because history tells us offer sheets don't work.
When was the last time a significant player signed one?
So I suspect Gms don't see it as a path that likely pays off.

Depends on how you look at it though.
It always works in the sense that it can help drive up the market price of a player for a team you are in competition with.

Which drives up the cost of your own RFAs.

The player actually has to sign the offer sheet. You can’t just send it his way and it’s a done deal.
For all you know Svechnikov loves it in Carolina and had no interest negotiating with other teams. Based on the term I suspect that’s the case.

GMs throwing offer sheets at players pushes up salaries, which hurts - wait for it - GMs.

That's just a safe way of looking at it though.
NHL GMs are just too scared to ruffle some feathers and actually make moves that could be a bit risky.
Did the Aho offer sheet drive up the price for Montreal's UFAs?
It's been 16 years since the lockout and there have been 9 offer sheets in that time. NHL GMs just refuse to use a tool that's available to them because they seem to be too afraid to do it.
