Default Which iPod should I buy?

I have a gift certificate for Future Shop so I'm thinking that I might as well get one of those iPod thingies I see all the kids have these days.

The part of me that says "always get the best version possible" is leaning towards the 80gb video iPod, but I heard a rumour (that I can't find any confirmation for) that video isn't available through iTunes to Canadians. Is that true?

If the video portion is useless, I think I'll probably get a Nano. I'd love to hear people's advice.

I know I'll be using it a lot for running and working out, and I'm sure the people at the gym will be happy to no longer see me using my cassette Walkman.

Thanks!

I'm very happy with my Creative Zen Vision:m

I prefer it to my Nano.

I'm guessing 1000-2000 songs, not sure.

My main question really is video or not. I don't want to spend x amount of dollars more for a feature I can't use, but on the other hand, I don't want to get the Nano and then regret not having the video feature if it's standard in a year or so.

You can't buy movies through itunes Canada, but you can buy music videos. There are third party programs that allow you to put dvds in itunes and onto your ipod.

I have the 30G video and love it.

If you're using it for working out, then go for the Nano or Shuffle.

If you really want video, get both the Shuffle and the 30GB Video.

If thats all you have (1000-2000 songs) you should be looking between the 8GB nano and the 30GB video. The 80GB video holds 25,000 songs or 100 hours of video. Pretty gratuitous for your purposes.

You can't purchase full length DVDs from itunes canada, but you can convert any DVDs you own/borrow/rent by using a program like DVD2POD or something like it. There are free ones, but i havent googled them myself.

I wouldn't reccomend buying the 80GB if you dont have enough stuff to fill it. You wouldn't buy a cargo van if you weren't hauling anything, would you?

PS: Keep in mind that the 30/80GB iPods have moving hard drives in them, so they are more proned to failure if they are bumped around (jogging, skiing, etc) than the Nanos. The Nanos have stationary flash memory so theres little or no chance of this problem occuring.

Think about whether you are going to ever actually watch video or not too. If not, theres no point in buying the 30/80.

IMO if you are thinking about the 30/80 i would buy the extended warranty for SURE. If you are thinking about the Nano, then its totally your choice, I would be either way depending on what they cover.

The Nano really isn't worth it for the money, an 8gb is only like $100 less than an 80gb Video.

Good advice, all. The smart choice for me, it seems, would be a Nano. I was thinking about the video iPod for travel, but it's not that crucial.

whatever you decide to get, get the warranty, the futureshop warranty covers teh battery, which sucks on all versions of ipods. even if its not broken you can tell them the batteries not lasting as long as it should and they will give you a new one. I have the 30Gig and i love it, i don't use the videos often but i have a lot of songs, i just like having the bigger screen/scroll wheel........ stupid fat fingers

I think they are better. You don't need to transcode any video to play on it. That season of The Office you torrented - just copy to the Zen and you are done.

Not to mention the 30GB Video is the same price as an 8Gm Nano.

I went with the video, even though i dont use the video feature, the 30GB for the same price as the 8GB did it for me. I listen to audio books when i travel for work and i can hold about 100-150 of them on my Ipod, plus a whole lot of music. Besides, with iTunes it is so easy to convert my music Cd's to my ipod so i can have most of my CD library on one machine and not lose much quality.

Of course, like others have mentioned, the Nano is a good buy if you use it to work out, as the Video's are a little too bulky for that.

I picked up a 4GB one of these for almost the price of a 2GB nano, quite nice:

My only complaint is it's not very loud.. so quiet I have to crank my car stereo with the FM transmitter I use to hear it (whereas with my old creative one I just had to have it at a normal volume level).

They need a ipod with voice recognition when looking for songs in the car.

Try scrolling a playlist with the scroll wheel and driving at the same time... Yikes.

If you do alot of working out, Nano if not, I would imagine the others are better $/Gb.

I have 520 songs on my nano with 8 playlists. I really only listen to 100 songs max on it though.

I personally prefer Creative Zen line also... not as popular as the iPods, but I like them.

I prefer my Creative Zen MicroPhoto over my Zen Vision W... main because of size.

I own both a Zen and an iPod, I prefer the iPod.

This is my Zen:

This is my iPod:

An 80GB iPod is $399.99 and a 30GB is $299.99 it may see only like a $100 but it's a lot if you're not going to ever use the memory space I have the 30 and it's not even half full. I dont care for the nano because a 4GB one is $229 anyways put in the extra and spend $299.99 on the iPod 30GB video (it's only $70 to get a ton more additional space). I highly recommend the 30GB for $299.99.

i got this thing where i plug in my ipod to my radio station and i control the songs through the radio, so changing songs doesn't requiring turning that scroll wheel thingy, but its just the same as changing radio stations.

I have both the 40GB video and I just got a new Shuffle to run with. I have to say, the new shuffle is awesome, it's smaller than a matchbook and when doing an activity like running or just working at your desk you could care less about a screen. No case is required which is another bonus and it has a built in clip which works wonders. 1GB holds like 240 songs which is plenty for me.

Apple Canada has refurbs for sale - $69.
