I believe Disney on Ice carries its own ice-making equipment for arenas without ice plants, so that's not a definitive indication that the arena still has the ability to make ice on its own.

The issue in Houston that I’m familiar with is that the Aeros used up too many prime weekend dates when it was more profitable to have other events in the arena. Mind you, the AHL played nearly all their games on weekends.
And concert tours can’t move their dates around that much, and they will have other options in the Phoenix area.

Red Deer Coyotes

The arena asked for fans.

So the 'Yotes get dunked on a whole lot around here. But I wanna give props to Jordan who's always repping his team here. Things have never been sunny for Arizona but this dude just wants them to succeed. This franchise has been through some tough sledding since their inception, seeing a fan who adopted them show that much support is awesome.
That said I hope they can figure something out. It's strange seeing ownership groups from other cities paying north of 1/2 billion just to join the club, while another franchise is nickel and dimeing their landlords to the point of 300k penalties.

I see the "want to do something special with the arena" a few times in the readings today.
Spitballing here but maybe Glendale think they can get some sort of residency acts ala Las Vegas, or multiple concert series where 5 or 6 acts play two or three times a week for 2 months each and draw tourists into the entertainment area.and hotels.
Or, for example, bring decent concerts in to coincide with the 9 NFL home games, again, getting tourists who are coming to watch the football game, have a good concert the Saturday night before.

Just relocate to Quebec City.
This is 1000% a hockey hotbed and they build a 400 million dollar arena to prove it.
I would still be a Flames fan though. Just make seeing games so much more convenient.
I have had my hopes crushed before though on many occasions though so I'll remain doubtful.

Move them to Salt Lake City. They Can play in the 10.5K hockey arena until a new one can be built. The Arena the Utah Jazz play in doesn't work for hockey.

TV market size is the key for the NHL...not how many people they can get in the building. If they leave they are going to Houston

I thought I remembered reading that the arena in Houston didn’t want an nhl tenant. That was quite a while ago though.

Although times have been tough in the hospitality business so maybe he’d strike a deal with a tenant, but I’d be surprised. The previous owner of the Rockets, Les Alexander, kicked the Aeros out of the arena. Without a certain amount of lease payment, makes no sense to give up prime dates to one tenant.
|
New owner in Houston. Rumour saith he may be interested in an NHL franchise. But as Strange Brew says, he'd want to own it.

If the Houston team is not called the Aeros, I will be very dissatisfied.

I'm not sure TV market matters as much to the league right now as it used to, considering they just signed new deals.
Houston >= Phoenix from a tv standpoint (both are just kinda irrelevant nationally...), and it's actually better for a central division alignment (KC would be good, too).
Toronto2/Hamilton could be the real cash cow for the league though. Would CBJ really be that upset to move back to the CEN? Even if PIT/WAS fall off, the other 5 teams could be tough for years to come. COL is the only great team in the central...

They want to keep their partners happy and there will be future deals. Houston is a top 10 TV market in the US. If the Yotes move they are going to Houston IMO

That’d be great. Lots of expats and business travellers to fill a good part of that arena too!
I saw the Aeros play many years back, it was fun

Rankings I have seen show Houston 6 to 8th largest market.
Phoenix 11 or 12. I would love to know what Coyotes TV ratings are, I assume they’re abysmal.
Didn’t the guy just buy the Coyotes? Is he really going to want to sell so quickly vs. scrounge around for plan B. I’m not exactly privy to Tillman Fertitta’s bank account but I don’t believe he’s in a good position to fork out $500+ million for a team right now. Hospitality business struggling and while he paid over a billion for the Rockets, he hasn’t seen the return on that investment and it may have extended him a little.
Glendale probably knows they have a strong bargaining position right now. And the BATNA of team leaving likely doesn’t bother them a bit.

It's hard to see what that matters much. The US national tv deals account for about 600 million dollars, but nhl total revenues are 6 billion. The Canadian deal is 400 million and there are only 8 Canadian teams. I don't see Houston moving the needle much at all in national tv money. Also, as cord cutting shifts away from the cable carriage fee model, the large market with low viewership models are useless in generating revenue.
On the other hand, I don't know that Bettman understands all that, and he may still be obsessed with getting every last time he can out of American national TV. It seems that he thinks of these deals as his biggest personal accomplishments, even though they aren't that significant in the big picture.

8 Canadian teams? So they are bringing back the Nords?

I took a negotiating class once and learned this term. Best Alternative To Negotiated Agreement
He had this expression "the smell of batna is in the air" when someone was about to threaten to walk away.
I like using the acronym so it makes me sound smarter than I am.
