Pretty sure Hamilton could take an NHL team and they could play out of the FirstOntario Centre. If Winnipeg can have a team it would stand to reason a city of a similar size with access to the huge population base in lower Ontario would do just as well. And I'm sure the appetite is there.

More Canadian options is always good.

The league just balanced the East and West Conferences. If the Coyotes move, it won't be to the east.

Why? Do you have any idea how much unnecessary Carbon a Hockey team emits? We should force them all to shutter. Close down youth hockey too.

Might get us down to 1.98% of World Emissions!

Just once so far.

ASU is moving into their new 5,000 seat arena next year. Maybe the Coyotes can move into the broom closet the Sun Devils currently play in.

Nonsense. You build a rink in Tempe, Mesa or Scottsdale and they make money.

The Calgary equivalent of Glendale is Airdrie or Cochrane. Put the Flames there and they'd be having the same issues.

The team will for sure go to Houston (Sorry Quebec) if they relocate
They aren't making any money from the Yotes as it is, they're already past due on 1.5M they owe the city. They're basically just evicting deadbeat tenants

Pheonix has a Metro pop of 5 million, that's enough people to keep an arena healthy without an anchor team, the arena also sits in the middle of the city's entertainment district, it's not hard to imagine why they'd consider the Coyote's a dead fish tenant. Pheonix even has another 17,000+ capacity arena that the Suns play at.

Arizona is a good market on paper. It has the demographics and fills out the geography nicely. Their organization has just been a mess though. I expect the NHL to keep fighting for them though based on the reasons above.

Although, they might also not mind a sweet relocation fee to a city like Houston or Portland given that expansion is likely not on the plate for a long time. Or maybe they could disperse the Coyotes and offer up an expansion opportunity somewhere to get more money. Personally, if i was a potential owner, I would rather pay for an expansion team than buy the hot mess that the Coyotes are plus paying a relocation fee.

I am not sure if there are legalities preventing that sort of thing though or how dispersal works. I imagine the NHL would have to buy out the current owners or something.

I believe they removed the ice making operation. not 100% on that but it's more about whether or not Suns owner Robert Sarver wants a partner. So far he has not

So before you pencil in a move to Houston you have to know if the owners want to sell. Because I don’t think Fertitta wants a tenant for his arena. He’d want to own the team.

Although times have been tough in the hospitality business so maybe he’d strike a deal with a tenant, but I’d be surprised. The previous owner of the Rockets, Les Alexander, kicked the Aeros out of the arena. Without a certain amount of lease payment, makes no sense to give up prime dates to one tenant.

RIP to the “entertainment” district around that Glendale arena. One less Johnny Rockets in the world.

80% of the ticket base is an hour away from the arena in Glendale. It just doesn't work during the week if you have a family and weekend games are roadtrips

Alex Meruello who owns casino's will be the proud owner of an Arizona gambling license - the last thing he wants to do is move the team out of state.

I never thought I would see the day that Jordan! confirms that he is 80% of the Coyotes season-ticket base.

Why did they make the decision to do this? Is there just no real estate in Phoenix proper to build an arena there? Did they over-estimate the affinity level of the fanbase? Did they expect the Glendale area to have its own gravity to draw crowds?

We keep hearing about distance being an issue, but if it was based on logistical reasons that can't be overcome, then that is still a market problem.

According to this website, Glendale has a higher population density than Phoenix.

Maybe I am over simplifying things, but the arena location should be beneficial to drawing more crowds.
