Eichel won't be playing for 2-3 months. The Sabres hold all the cards in all this. They have zero urgency to trade him right now. Sabres are waiting for a team to offer them the moon. Otherwise, why rush a deal from their perspective?

I don't think this team has ever had that true elite #1 center.
And not even talking about the generational guys because really only Pittsburgh and Edmonton have claim to those guys since 1980 (Gretzky, Lemieux, Crosby, McDavid).
But we haven't even had a guy at the tier below in the Sakic, Yzerman, Thornton, etc range.

Nieuwendyk is in the Hall of Fame and also has a Conn Smythe Trophy and was an integral part of 3 Cup championships.
I think he qualifies as an elite #1 center.
Gilmour was too while he was here, but he was overshadowed by Nieuwendyk.
I would put both guys in the same tier as Sakic, Yzerman and Thornton. Maybe I'm biased. I think Gilmour and Nieuwendyk had better two way games than those 3 guys, they probably sacrificed some points so their numbers aren't as gaudy as those 3. I think Gilmour and Nieuwendyk were as good a 1-2 punch as Sakic-Forsberg, it's too bad ego, management and money got in the way.
Both Gilmour and Nieuwendyk didn't get the recognition until they played for the Leafs. That's the problem with playing in Calgary. I mean how Iggy wasn't one of the top 100 players of all time says it all about how bad it is to play in Calgary. If Iggy played in Toronto, he'd have been in the top 20. Mike Gartner? Dave Keon? Ted Kennedy? Give me a break.

1) every team knows that the Sabres HAVE to make a deal
2) Eichel is a $10m/yr dead asset until they make a trade
They most certainly do not hold all the cards

NMC kicks in next summer. They can hold him back until the start of the year at which point who is trading for him? He's 2-3 months at minimum from playing then and may miss the whole season. So the idea that the Sabres can wait for the biggest loser to step forward, take their 1OA and complete the trade doesn't work. Those teams are likely to keep their 1OA if they know they're out of it and why would they trade for Eichel at that point anyway? Then, when teams do want to look at Eichel he has his NMC to limit where he can go. And probably still hasn't had the surgery yet.

There was never a fake account, the Buffalo reporter who said it was fake retracted his statement.

The Jack Eichel side eye emoji reminded me of this. Not quite a side eye, I guess

I just cannot see it happening. Doing so would require forfeiting millions of dollars in career earnings. He is not just losing out on the value of his ELC in the years he chooses to stay in college. It is all that, plus the massive amounts of money he is leaving on the table for the two, three or four years he is delaying signing his ELC. Think about it like this:
· Owen Powers declines to sign with Buffalo. Buffalo waits-out three years before trading him to another team
· Powers signs his three-year ELC in 2024. Between 2024–27 he accumulates career earnings of $11.0 m with bonuses.
But, if Powers signs next year in Buffalo:
· Owen Powers signs his three-year ELC in 2022. Between 2022–25 he earns $11.0 m with bonuses.
· In 2025 Powers signs a long-term extension worth $7.0 m per season. By 2027 his career earnings are $35.0 m.
That's +$14.0 m of earnings simply by starting his career in Buffalo earlier than if he holds out to play elsewhere. If he holds out and refuses a contract from Buffalo, he could potentially forego well over $10 m in earnings as a result.

Living in Ann Arbor and being a hockey superstar/ probably a hobey contender in the college circuit will be a lot of fun for another year, I have no doubt (having lived in Ann Arbor.)
But I agree with TC, no way Power would hold out longer than that because the risk becomes obscene. Buffalo therefor has no impetus to trade him.

Right, but the idea I was addressing was that top-prospect would actually wait out a full four years in order to finish college and enter free agency. A situation like this is ludicrous. If Buffalo can't sign Powers next summer, then they would have to move him ASAP.

With four of the top-5 picks from the draft (and 5 total first-rounders) all committed to Michigan for next season, I think it was expected that they'd all go to University for this season.
After they win the Frozen Four next year, they'll likely all sign their NHL contracts the next day.
I don't think there's any risk of any of them playing out the full four years.
