Be kinda cool to back door Buffalo and turn around and trade Eichel to the rangers for a big haul. They have some nice pieces. Eichel would be exciting but man risky.

It's not much, but Mike Futa did briefly mention today on Tim & Friends that Anaheim and Calgary were still potential landing spots for Eichel. Says that NYR is the last place in the world where Buffalo would want to trade him to.

Yes, after finally landing the franchise C this team has not had in decades we are going to ship him off for futures. Sounds realistic.

Not sure what the smartest guy comment means. It was a reasonable shot to take for a cheap price.

Dang it you are right. Funny how in my head that off-season wasn't the one preceding that regular season.

Well, sure you can make the case it was reasonable, but in the end it was another gamble that had a good justification and story but simply did not work out.

(Actually I don’t even put that all on Czarnik)

Contrast with last year’s signings of guys like Spezza and Perry by other teams. Questionable moves that did work out

Don’t overthink it. Tre is a grinder

Criticizing a minor but rationale move like signing Czarnik seems trivial but totally on brand.

I barely remember Czarnik the player and there are still posters ready to criticise and question the narrative around that player’s, who happened to be a tweener, signing.

Fantastic and insane. Love it.

The Czarnik signing was a perfectly reasonable bet and there wasn't really any downside to it whatsoever.

IIRC a number of teams were pretty interested in Czarnik.

Kidding? You painted it as an example of an exciting off season move

It’s not a big deal. It had little downside. It was nothing. Other GMs have gotten impact players for minimum wage. Details matter

Laughing at you trying to put this on me as trivial given how you were excited about it

And rationale is a noun. You meant rational

Woot!

Point being - fun off-seasons don't always lead to good seasons.

The baffling thing about Czarnik to me is that Tre and Peters flew to see him and convince him to sign with the Flames. They targeted the kid and went all out to get him.

Then Peters barely played him.

Yeah and that's what he was considered at the time. A young player with strong AHL production and good skill that some thought was stuck behind a deep Bruins line-up.

Exactly the type of guy one should target.

Doesn't mean it will work out. But there was some excitement at the time - which was my original point.

And the problem is that there are a lot of roster filler that simply did not work out

Czarnik. About to pop. Amounted to nothing. Leivo, Nordstrom, Simon, Nesterov, Rinaldo, etc.

Like I said, and you ignored this, I don’t put it all on Czarnik. As Roof mentioned, they pursued and didn’t even play the guy. So there was some sort of mismanagement, whether it was talent identification or player development / handling.

You can’t seriously call me out for pointing out a single roster filler signing that didn’t work out. Because there are several. That’s kind of the bigger problem.

When we are looking back fondly at Czarnik as a good off season signing we are getting in to Oiler territory.

It's actually hard to understand what point you're trying to make.
