It's not just a question of whether he has stopped the bad habits. Players that perform at a high level into their mid and late 30s are those that go above and beyond and are committed to their off-ice fitness and nutrition.
It's not unreasonable given what is known about his habits in the past and his physical stature, that a long-term deal at a high cap rate carries some risk.

This is just me spitballing, but maybe the holdup is Armstrong and the Tarasenko deal. Once Tarasenko is moved, STL would have enough room for someone like Tkachuk. Tkachuk gets traded for futures, and away we go.

That would make Eichel worth a lot less as he would still need surgery and maybe be available for the playoffs

FYI, Treliving used the process when talking about Valimaki's injury progress a few years back. If you aren't listening for it you might never notice it. Start listening for it and it feels like he says it all the time.
As for the delays, lack of moves, etc I wonder if we are looking at (to quote Pierre McGuire unfortunately) paralysis by analysis.

Yeah he says it here and there and that's because most of his interviews are pretty dry and he uses the word to fill in the blanks.

It's still unlikely that Eichel is getting traded this week. What you feel in your loins can most likely be cleared up with a shot.
