Matthew Phillips' stock really dropped with his slowdown in the second half the AHL season last year. Understandable, I guess.

Poirier. Highly skilled blueliner that this team desperately needs back there.

Phillips, then Francis for me.

Won’t be shocked to see Francis make me look silly that he wasn’t in the top 10. But for right now I’ve got Phillips slightly ahead based on the difficulty of the league he’s in.

I'm going with the guys that have upside next: Francis, Poirier, Jordan, Pettersen, Whynot, Beck

(surprised there has been no talk of Pettersen yet, he went 6th last year - ahead of Phillips, Poirier and Ruzicka)

Another small player whose skills may not translate to the NHL. These small guys have to rip up the AHL to be considered a prospect for the NHL, and none of Calgary's small guys are scoring at the levels expected. These guys need to be above a PPG, not hovering at half or three-quarters of a PPG. Until they get there they are in tough for serious consideration as a significant NHL prospect.

I know, and he was never one I was big on. I am simply observing that it is interesting that there has been no talk of him at all to this point, which is a pretty big drop from #6 last year.

Emilo- Petterson and Phillips are suffering for their poor output in the AHL

Both players dont have reputations as hard nosed or excellent two way player who can kill penalties. They both strike me as Czarnik types, players who need to puck to succeed, but offer very little when they dont hold it. If they aren't scoring they aren't contributing.

It's hard to produce much when the team you're playing for is barely scoring 2.0 goals per game down the stretch. Ruzicka slowed down even more.

Pettersen and Phillips are definitely getting underrated in these rankings.

I hope you're right, honestly.

They're both great stories and have a lot of skill.

But given their size, the fact that Calgary has boosted their prospect depth a smidge, and a somewhat underwhelming AHL finish I think mid teens isn't a bad spot for them.

We've certainly seen guys fall down the list only to graduate the very next season.

Ilya Solovyov as a darkhorse. Let's see how he does in Stockton this season.

@Bingo—Sure. I think Phillips' updated waiver status and handedness — along with him leading the AHL club in scoring last year — makes him a pretty good candidate to make the team out of camp. He's #5 on my own list. Ryan Francis is another very good pick here, though.

Wouldnt be surprised to see Francis close to a top 5 spot next season if he continues to progress the way he has up to this point.

I don't know about that.

This year's rankings through 12 include six (I am pretty sure it is six) prospects who were not with the organization last year. I think all of them have a lot of upside that very possibly eclipses both Phillips and Pettersen. It could be as simple as the pool of prospects having improved a great deal since last year.

It sure feels like it is a lot deeper with higher-end talent.

Which is natural.

Every year a guy is in the system it's a season to either reinforce the previous year's ranking or fall back, because the potential will always sway to the younger player.

Coronato was a natural to move past that next tier of players (Phillips etc), Stromgren makes sense as the 2nd round pick.

Then you add guys like Heineman (2nd rounder last year) and Vladar and there's all kinds of pressure on the after 5 guys from last year's list.

Plus that's two straight years with 8 picks per year for more overall bodies, and some further down the draft board making some head way (Francis).
