I think most end up re-signing, too. But it's a little surprising none have yet. We normally see these kind of guys extended on the first available day.

Why hasn't he been signed? Their GM must be terrible if he can't get his pending FA center signed before the season starts..... am I doing this right?

Unfortunately, no.

He still has another year under contract. The yearly mark just recently passed allowing them to negotiate the next one however, and people are surprised they haven’t signed one already.

A poster on CP (I want to say TBull) said he had a source with connections to the team that confirmed there is definitely a rift between Tkachuk and the team/management, and he also said Treliving had offered Tkachuk for Eichel but Buffalo wasn't all that interested because they know Tkachuk would be unlikely to sign there long term.

His source was revealed to Textcritic and had apparently been accurate with information in the past.

Barkov has a 12 team no list. A lot different than a 5 team yes list.

Couturier has no trade protection at all. Zibanejad and Malkin have had full NMC for the last few years.

I am sarcastically comparing it to the panic on a Flames board to how they talk about the GM not signing Johnny, who is in the exact same contract position as Barkov.

Barkov is 26 year old PPG Selke winning centre who you would unhesitantingly sign to a long term deal at $11M if necessary (if not plugging your nose and paying more), but hopefully you can find mutual benefits to drive the AAV down. If you can't, you trade him for a HAUL to the highest bidder of 20 teams.

Johnny is also...a LHS forward UFA at the same time...everything else is different.

I think you are making Beatle17's case. Panther fans shouldn't be panicking that Barkov isn't signed today (or argue that their GM is a negligent nincompoop for not getting a deal done). The stakes are even higher for Barkov but it doesn't mean there isn't room for negotiation and that may take time.

If he reaches UFA, he’ll get offers for more than $12M.

Who would you rather have in the NHL today at UFA prices?

I would take him over McDavid easily. Just a better player, the type you build a team around.

The McDavid statement, surely you jest. Putting aside Oiler hate, his defence isn’t as bad as people here make it out to be. No matter Barkov’s great two way play, you can’t convince me McDavid’s offence alone isn’t the single craziest game changer in the league.
