Hailey Salvian just posted an article on the Athletic on what chips Calgary might be able to offer in the Eichel deal and reviewed what the Flames have in terms of 1st round picks as Buffalo started with the notion of a package that would equate to "4 first round picks"
Quote:
It’s not a lot, especially compared to what teams like Ottawa, L.A. or the Rangers could offer with more full prospect cupboards. And, if we believe that the Sabres are mostly interested in adding to their young core, which ranges between 18 to 23 years old, that cuts this list down to five desirable players: Coronato, Zary, Pelletier, Valimaki and Tkachuk.
|
Maybe the price has come down since, as a lot of teams are now shifting away a little from dealing with Buffalo's demands.
While I understand Buffalo has some concern with Tkachuk, IMO I don't think the deal works unless its Tkachuk rather than Monahan...

At this point, Buffalo has concerns of Tkatchuk playing for more than 2 years, but Calgary has concern Eichel will ever play, or even if he does, can he ever get back to 100% of his level. So both sides have risk.
I'm at the point where I feel like it should be max of Tkatchuk, a protected 1st, and a prospect. If Buffalo takes it, great, we have a deal. If not, then Tre should just move on.

I'm ok using Tkachuk in the deal, but he's worth at least 3 1sts in value on his own.

That tells me the Flames aren't in this. If that's the price, keep your powder dry and look elsewhere. Four of those five pieces in a 4-for-1 deal is a crippling hit to the organization. I'm not against dealing three of those five, but they need to be in separate deals. Valimaki and one of the recent picks (plus another roster player or two) in a deal for Eichel, then Tkachuk in a deal where he recoups multiple assets to balance out the body counts. I think we can be further ahead with that strategy, but that would require Treliving to be as creative as some are claiming he is, and get two significant deals done.

You are far too enamored with our prospects if you truly believe this.

"we can't trade any of Klimchuk, Poirier, Jon Gillies, or Sven Baertschi. It would cripple our franchise going forward!!"

So are there any RFAs out there that are worth going up to 10.2M. The cost would be two 1sts, a 2nd, and a 3rd. Can recoup those picks in other deals. Although Calgary would have to get their 3rd back from Boston.

If they wants that price, good luck!
How about Tkachuk + Pelletier or Zary + 2nd round 2022 /if we are in playoff 2nd becomes 1st/. That's my highest offer.

For gods sake just trade him already, and unless it's to the Flames, don't trade him west.
Ridiculous.

That's also assuming we get a fully functional Eichel back.

I can't figure out what could be holding up a Gaudreau and/or Tkachuk extension if we're NOT in the Eichel sweepstakes. The fact that Johnny wasn't trading before his NMC kicked in must be related to some bigger moves that have yet to happen yet

maybe the team is keeping this bullet in their chamber to trot out if something bad happens...like when we don't get Eichel then it'll be "but on the bright side, here's Johnny".

Taking a while to get to 5000
|
I get the impression that people want this to mean more than it is when really its Treliving taking his time to get the Gaudreau extension done. Gaudreau's last deal took a while, so will this one.
Could I be wrong? Of course.

Well, the ask isn't any one of the 5 first-rounders, it's 4 of them.
Tkachuk is already better than any of the guys you mentioned, by a mile.
If this were 5 years ago would you trade Gaudreau, Tkachuk, Mangiapane, and Andersson for a player like Eichel? I'm aboard the Eichel train, but to say that wouldn't be crippling is hilarious, and that's a lighter ask than the current ask.

More accurately, that should be, "We can't trade all of Monahan, Bennett, Tkachuk, or Valimaki in a deal for one player, it would be a crippling hit to our organization."
We saw how crippling to the team it was when a single one of the players turned into a pumpkin. We ruminate over the fact that Sam Bennett never turned into the player he was supposed to be. Imagine removing all of them and having none of them turn into the players they did? How would this team look right now? How would the organization have developed?
Also, Gillies wasn't a first rounder, so another swing and a miss.

i dunno... did anyone really have high expectations for Klimchuk, Poirier or Jon Gillies?
I think with Sven Baertschi, people were really excited for him, but I don't think anyone viewed Klimchuk, Poirer and Gilles as having anywhere close to the potential to Pelletier, Zary, Valimaki or Coronato

Given the players draft position, the former was much more accurate describing the pieces than our top picks ever.

Gillies yes. The rest not so much. Gillies was Killin it at the time.

Baertschi was super hyped but the other three were normal hype.
Tkachuk plus three of those prospects would hurt. If any team was offering the equivalent Eichel would be traded.
