Took a look at last seasons numbers just because I was curious on what kind of production was lost/gained with the changes and came out a bit surprised. Now, obviously this isn't a prediction of next season, but I did find it interesting.

Out:
Giordano
Ryan
Leivo
Simon
Nordstrom
Stone
Robinson
Rinaldo

Total GP lost: 226
Total Points lost: 59
Total Goals lost: 20

In:
Coleman
Zadorov
Pitlick
Lewis
Welinski

Total GP gained: 217
Total Points gained: 60
Total Goals gained: 36

Total P/GP of the players leaving: 0.261
Total P/GP of the players coming in: 0.276

Total G/GP of the players leaving: 0.088
Total G/GP of the plays coming in: 0.165

I dunno if this means anything, outside of the fact that even with the loss of Gio, we've possibly replaced the production we lost in total and added more goal-scoring ability already. And should have a few million to sign another player or add salary in a trade that could improve a position.

Anyways, just thought it was interesting.

The point is the Flames replaced similar production players on the bottom 6. Of course it doesn’t fit your bottom 6 greatly improved narrative

That's not my narrative hoss I never once claimed that. But I will say Lewis and Leivo had similar point production last year but one guy is coming onto this team as a proven cup winner under this coach who can bring some more leadership to this team that needs it.

Production I agree our bottom 6 isn't any better than it was last year but they are going to be much tougher to play against. See NYI 4th line and how tough they are especially in the playoffs. Cizakas, Martin and Clutterbuck are one of the best 4th lines in the league but production numbers aren't anything special.

The Blues had a similar line when they won the cup.

The Flames are arguably better team overall but right now I'd say it's probably not enough to be a good enough team to be a contender. They are easily a much more physical team though and finally have a identity so it's possible that they could surprise everyone on how good they are.

Sometime not spending a stupid amount during the summer is a win too. Even if the Flames are a non-playoff team they have already done well at improving the prospect pool with guys like Coronato and Vlader voted as 2 of our top 5 prospects. Coleman contract has some risk but I believe that he will be a much better add then he is getting credit for right now.

C+ so far is fair I think. Love the Coleman addition, not sure about the contract long-term. Losign Gio hurts and I'm not sure just bringing in Zadorov will fix anything. Pitlick and Lewis don't move the needle for me, and Vladar, while talented, is still a bit of a question mark.

I'll echo those who question off-season grades in mid August though, makes little sense. And also LOL at the B+ for Edmonton ... some "experts" never learn.

Forwards are a bit better, from a depth and style of play perspective. D is quite a bit worse with Giordano gone and zadorov looking to be the only replacement. Goaltending is like even, giveth unknown nature of vlader at the NHL level.

If the season were to start now, I think the flames are about the same as the last few years; a middle of the pack, wild card contender. Which is what I think is the org's mandate.

I'd give it a C grade. Would have been higher if gaudreau had been extended by now, and/or a shakeup of the top forwards on the team.

This deadline is going to be interesting if the flames are fighting for a WC spot. Do they deal gaudreau or do they just hope to get in and likely lose him for nothing. Classic flames asset (mis)management....

That article is assuming off season is done already for the flames.

Tre is not done.
... Tre is not done, right?

Tre may be done. The closer we get to camp, the more likely it is this is the roster we're heading into the season with. That wouldn't be what we hoped for or needed.

Where did Michael Stone go? I'm not seeing that transaction.

Currently a free agent.
But don't worry Michael Stone will be back.
He always comes back.

Based on the moves completed so far, Flames in my view are no better than a "C-"

Squad is likely not as good as last year

However as lots of others mentioned, off season is not over as of yet

Will need to wait to see if the Flames can find a way to make additional moves (i.e. trades)

Again, why are we giving out grades mid-offseason?

Doing so going into training camp makes more sense.

I dont think there is much to like this offseason. Flames still lack a franchise forward and lost a number one defenceman.

First line looks weak, but bottom three lines look strong.
First pairing looks weak, but bottom two pairings look fairly average.

I dont think that's a recipe for success.

If you read the article,

Coyotes also moved a huge contract.

Acquired draft picks and prospects

Basically they are in a full rebuild mode.

I thought the thread was about ESPNs performance so far (eg the expansion draft) which I grade an F.

Don’t all teachers grade assignments when students are half way through completing them?
