Overall my biggest issue with this season is that it's just not very funny, and the characters seem to be doing things that are out of character for the purpose of gags. Kind of things me of what happened to the Simpsons post season 10 or so.
So far, these self contained comedy focused episodes just haven't been funny. In the past they hadn't done so many of these. There was always a citadel episode or two. A Beth/Rick, Beth/Jerry, Morty, etc relationship/character development arc that they had as a side story arc. This season they referenced those arcs, but only as call backs to previous episodes. The call backs seem way to frequent and lazy.
This episode was pretty great though. I'm hoping we get a very solid citadel/evil Morty episode as a finale.

Isn't the citadel of ricks gone? Rick destroyed it by portalling it into the federation ship (killing many other Ricks in the process...) Could get another evil morty/space beth episode but no more Citadel. The citadel never would have allowed the asimov cascade of Rick clones, for E.g.

The citadel is still there. It was rebuilt. Last we saw it, Evil Morty had just won the election and killed his opponents. I think the episode from season 3 episode 7 "The Citadel of Ricks" is the last episode with the citadel. The episode you're think of was "the rickshank redemption", which was episode 1 from season 3, and it was a prison not a ship that the citadel was transported into:

IMO more evidence that we should abandon hope of a consistent thread of underlying plot line. It's designed to be inconsistent.

I never really felt there was any consistency, nor is there really meant to be. I think it's just meant to be a funny show that kind of takes advantage the philosophical for its comedy. But the show itself isn't meant to take itself that seriously, it's just whatever works in the moment. I think some of y'all are giving it way too much pressure to have meaning.

There was definitely more continuity with the main storyline in earlier seasons. This one jumped around a lot and had a lot of one-offs. That's why the Bird Person episode was good and sorely needed I think.
It's still entertaining, but I think when the episodes build off of the previous ones it's a little more interesting to follow.
But yeah, there isn't a lot of structure to the show as a whole either and they make up the rules as they go. Finding some similarities to how Community progressed, where the episodes kept getting stranger and more and more detached from the original premise that drew you in. Mind you, we're not at that point yet, but this season albeit entertaining is wandering a bit.
Anyways... Boob World!

Yes and no. The formula of the show was always one offs, but there was always a lot of cohesiveness between episodes and small details to pick up on. For example, the imagination parasites seeds are actually subtly placed into a previous episode. The series has also spent a lot of time with it's world building and character development. It's not a sitcom that just resets itself every episode.
Overall though, my main problem isn't with the plot holes this season. The bigger issue is that I don't find it that funny. They've started reusing a lot of jokes and relying on a lot of cliches. The characters also seem to have less depth.

I just re watched the vat of acid episode and noticed a few weird clap backs. When Morty was experimenting with the time travel remote there is a bar that looks very similar to Moe's and later there is a guy after the plane crash who's wearing the same style and colour of toque as Stan from south park.

The two most interesting episodes all season were "canon". I mean, I get why they have to go episodic given their commitment for at least 6 more seasons, and they aren't all bad. That said, this is the least memorable season so far with a lot of very average moments and a few awesome ones.

I really thought they turned the season around with the last 3 episodes. I found those great. The perfect amount of plot reveal, but also set up the show for a wider future. The model of the show has always been ot leak out the canon related episodes interspersed among the episodic ones. My issue with episodes 3-6 was that they weren't funny. The overall formula is still a solid one. They just need better writing for the self-contained episodes.
