Here’s some exciting news: The District, a new development that will feature a food hall and several restaurants and events spaces at the base of a trio of office buildings that take up the 200th block between 11th and 12th Avenue S.W. is still in construction, but the developers have confirmed many of the tenants that will hopefully start to open their doors in the late summer and early fall. The dining hall itself will feature quick service kiosks from notable local chefs like Duncan Ly (Foreign Concept), Darren MacLean (Nupo, Shokunin) and Adam Ryan (The Coup), but there will also be a number of proper sit-down restaurants, including a still-to-be-announced concept in the main “market shed” from Craft Beer Market’s P.J. L’Heureux, a new micro-brewery, and other delicious things.
Many locals were saddened when Workshop Kitchen + Culture announced that it would be moving out of the Grand Theatre earlier this year, but it’s now been revealed that chef Kenny Kaechele will be launching a new restaurant in The District called Kama. The new place will be a 120-seat restaurant (with an ample patio) with a bustling open kitchen and a menu full of “modern rustic Mediterranean” cuisine, drawing influence from both Europe and the Middle East. It’s definitely something to look forward to in the fall.
I need to try Tokyo Station. Looks like a cool Ramen bar and market.
Fully agreed. We only made it once just before Covid, but it was a fun and fantastic experience.
I'm just putting this out there, and I realize I have no one but myself to blame - I dragged my feet and now it seems every reservation slot until they close is taken. If anyone here has a reservation that they can't make, I'd appreciate an opportunity to take it... I'm not sure what sort of financial hold they're asking for, but I'll gladly pay that or make whatever arrangements needed. Long shot, but thanks in advance.
Just call down and ask to be on the cancellation list. They are VonDerFul there and will get you in, as they always have last minute cancellations.

Weird. I had checked OpenTable and it showed nothing... Looking again now, shows nothing on the 3rd, or any other date prior to closing
I'll try calling.
I tried Flirty Bird in Bridgeland the other day. They're a Nashville Hot Chicken sando stop with a few different side options. If you, like George Costanza, like your chicken spicy then this place will lite you up! I had the hot and was sweating through my face. The Mild and Medium chicken is still very flavourful and not that spicy. Subjective obviously.
They're across from Shiki Menya in their old space. Give them a try!

Anybody try out Major Tom yet? Genuine A5 has my attention...
A couple weeks ago I was looking at OneTable for a reservation and there was something maybe a couple weeks out for after work, but I didn't book it. By time I looked back the next day those times were all gone and the open slots were in September. So booked something, but it is a ways off. Looking forward to it.
Also I was in Modern Steak on Stephan Ave I think a month ago, and they also have A5 now. It also has me intrigued.

I haven't gone down the A5 road yet, but the Brant Lake Wagyu at Modern is very, very good. Tomahawk for the win...also done them at home a couple of times through tempering (cook in oven at low temp first, then sear on grill)
You can also buy some A5 from Great Meats, and recreate what Drew did...only $155 for a 16oz piece of A5.
