The dream team had Neal.

Your brought Lucic in after that season. He wouldn’t stick up for MT in his first season with you guys against Kassian. Now it’s rumoured MT wants out.

They got bounced in the 1st round. How is this a "dream team"? Does anyone think it is?

The biggest difference in my view is going from having a Norris quality defenseman to not having one.

I wouldn't even know how to go about looking for this information, but I would bet that teams that don't have a single defenseman that would be even in the top 10 for consideration, do not tend to win conference or division titles.

The ‘dream team’ actually was a bad team with a hot streak

Just a lot of changes made when it seems the core stays the same:

Core guys gone: Gio, Brodie, Hamonic, maybe Bennett?

To me it appears that 2018-19 was the finished product from Treliving's POV and just the edges need a bit of tuning.

Two years down the road the core is 2 years older, many millions richer and has not played to expectations set in 2018-19. It is mainly intact looking at their 3rd try to get back the magic.

Why were the Flames so good and what happened?

No significant changes made from end of 2018-19 to 2019-20. Just a couple of bad bad contracts that were a reminder to both teams how stupid their GMs were.

There have been 99 seasons >107pts.

By pt% it is 149th all-time.

And a lot of seasons below them were pre-loser point.

In the cap era it is tied for the 47th best season. 21 teams have exceeded that mark.

107 was also the best for ARI, NJD, so there are only 7 teams with a lower best season:

MIN 106
PHI 106
TOR 105
NYI 103
FLA 103
EDM 103
LAK 102

Why don’t we talk about the ‘dream team’ that we hear about every year at this time up north and how this is the year. 40 yr old Smith and the worst D-core in the league and the newly minted Nurse who apparently now has officially added getting speed bagged throughout the year (this is nothing new) sticking up for Mavi and Raisatl to earn his contract. If one of those two princesses get hurt you miss the playoffs no question.

How’s James Neal working out?

Hey, just as long as Toronto and Edmonton are on the list.

Nice try but the Oilers were the losers in that fiasco...Flames won the game and the Oilers signed Kassian to a ridiculous contract

I'd be happy if this version of the flames even sniffs the first round

Bold words coming from the team that just inked Darnell Nurse for 9.25MM.

Every player wants out of Edmonton, hence the albatross contracts for guys that can play, even if they're not great. But also cause Dazey has the negotiating prowess of a senile uncle.

The MT stuff is not at all substantiated, and yes Lucic was soft against the oil in his first season fresh off that team but has bucked up since. Meanwhile kassian has retreated to his cave of irrelevance like the cowardly, booger-picking cyclops he is. He's better of being a mule for the hells angels.

A big piece, but not the entire answer, is a healthy Sean Monahan. He hasn’t been healthy since that year and that has impacted the punch of the top 6.
