I liked Nurses game last year, but my god that deal shocked me ! He sucks in his own zone for the most part and his offensive numbers are inflated by the 8 million dollar man and Mconemanteam.
Am I looking at this properly?? Does this make him the third highest cap hit defenseman in the league? Dude has the *checks notes* second highest cap hit on the team?? Higher than Leon Draisaitl???
Holy #### Holland, that's nuts.
Yes to all. He’s obviously better than Makar, Pietrangelo, Hamilton, Heiskenan, Chabot, etc.
What's going to be awesome is when Andersson outscores Nurse. This will be a contract that hangs around the Oilers' neck for almost a decade, more when they have to buy him out. Holland is an idiot. If it weren't for Francis he would be the worst GM in the league.
For the following year, there is less than $8mm in cap space to split amongst.....
1) pool party
2) yams
3) a 1a goalie to share duty with Smith
4) a 6th defenseman
5) and an entire bottom 6 forward line
Yams had 47 points in his last 79 games too. It’s not out of the question he could get 2 years around $3 mil. If they want him long term it’s going to be over $4mil maybe close to $5 mil
They could sign him to a 1 year deal could be around $2 mil but if he had a good year that will cost even more next summer
If yams deal is over $3 per even if klefbom retires they will have about $9 mil and 15 guys signed with not a whole lot of prospect forwards even close to nhl ready. Seems like that is where they will need bodies
Also if smith falls off a cliff this year they could need 2 goalies next summer
They need to be cup contenders now or they are in serious trouble
Seriously dude, you need to change your name to Oiler Lover or something.
Uh no, but I try to look at it from the Oilers perspective.
McDavid has 5 years left; Drai 4. They should be mortgaging their future to go all in and get good players to play with McDrai for the next 4 years. Use all your 2025+ picks and cap space to win now. If you don't, McDavid/Drai will leave and you will have wasted your golden ticket. That should be the plan, and them acting within that plan makes a lot of sense.
They've already wasted 6 years of McDavid having him play with no-talent sucks like Neal, Chiasson, Kassian, Archibald. On the back end, their best players have been Kris Russell, Klefbom, Sekera, and Larsson. That's a lot of suck.
This deal is a big overpay, but a) they need good players on their team now. b) the worst part of the contract will be in years 4+. This reasoning also shows why the Hyman signing is smart for them. Ceci is terrible though.

Has the NHL released what the 2022/23 salary cap will be at?
I look at what the Oilers have committed for 22/23, and the player's they'll need to re-sign, and it looks to me like unless the salary cap is 90M they're screwed next summer.
You assume each of Puljujarvi & Yamamoto will get 4M. That leaves 5M for the Oilers to sign 6 depth players & a starting goaltender (unless they think 41 year old Smith is their starter?) - it's not possible.

Are they good enough to win a cup? because this is it...they have no cap space for anything else
IMO the goaltending and D isn't even close to cup contending. Smith comes back to earth and they are a bubble team.
