Considering how much he's getting his teammates paid, McDavid is at this point taking up well over $20M of cap space.

Kenney is going to have to be taking a long, hard look at his draft picks.

Because those kids are going to be NHLers soon, whether they want to be or not.

Welcome to your 2022 "Sub-Replacement-Level-Randos!!"

He's getting paid but I would expect him to become a whipping boy if he doesn't put up elite numbers.

Wouldn't it be funny if he would be traded for OEL in 2 years?! Actually probably not, but I see this contract getting a similar return to what Arizona got for OEL in 2 years. That's a huge commitment to a player that's benefiting from an amazing shooting % this year. I think this contract is the best thing to come out of the North division.

I wasn't saying they are light years apart.

Read it again within the context of the hypothetical

You can tie me to a post and whip me senseless for $74 million.

I doubt he cares a whole lot about whether the teeming unwashed masses of Edmonton like him or not.

He is better off signing vets at the minimum as they can't afford to keep getting cap overage from bonuses.

You don't get paid for what you can do on the ice, you get paid to deal with the bull####.

Oilers: We are prepared to offer max term, 7M AAV. We think this is a fair offer.

Agent: You are aware our client had 65 minutes TOI in your final playoff game this past season....

Oilers: yeah, but we lost....In fact we got swept

Agent: Consider how much sooner you would have lost if our client hadn't played 65 minutes in that game 4 though.....

Oilers: Wow you guys are tough....Ok 9.25M AAV 8 Years. Take it or leave it.

You guys are all delusion.

This is an excellent signing and I hope to see more of the same from the genius that is Holland. May he reign for a 100 years.

Perused the HF Boards to get the fan reaction. It was as would be expected.
The general consensus I got from the replies were as follows:
-He is somewhere between overpaid 750k, to possible taking a discount from the 10+ he would have gotten next year.
-The term is ideal given that him being signed long term will convince Mavi to commit at the end of his contract
-He will continue to dominate the league and be a top 10 or maybe even top 5 dman for a long time (a few feel he is 3 years away from hitting his peak)
-Based on his progression, last year was not an anomaly, rather proof of the continuing trend (and being the north only actually hurt his numbers)

The timing makes no sense, why give Nurse this monster contract when you should be able to just wait and see how the next season starts.

So yeah, I think this strongly hints that the Oilers are in panic mode.

Agreed.

Kenny Holland should get an extension. A lucrative one. And all the Bobby-Macs he can eat!
