Will Sutter demand soft ice for the home team advantage like some genius reporter suggested?
Jokes aside, these are definitely better images to assess with. It's getting there..

I actually do hope they have the best ice in the league so that skilled and talented CGY players can best show what they can do.

It's on the space occupied by two parking lots. The streets around it are 12ave on the north side, 14 ave on the south, Olympic way on the west, and 5th st on the East.

They just finished building a hideous $80million parkade a block or so away (of course the Flames don’t benefit from it financially so they will try to undercut it). If you think any of the dusty lots to the North will be developed anytime soon I would love to share in your optimism.

Sorry, but this team has been mediocre on the ice and off for the better part of two decades. The city finally gets its #### together for a change and builds a beautiful library and music museum with the BMO expansion, Glenbow renovation, and Arts Commons reno either started or around the corner. I had high hopes that with CMLC involved the arena would be no different and become a showstopper that truly anchored a unique entertainment district. Unfortunately the Flames had to get their grubby paws on it and this is the result, a giant cineplex.

I find it very bland and sterile with way too many material choices on the exterior. I like the front arena plaza and the limited retail at grade but the rest is meh. If they continue to value engineer this, the roof will end up being corrugated metal. It is what it is. Maybe when it is complete it will end up looking better, but from the renderings it just comes across as lazy and uninspiring, especially from design teams that have created so much better.

Buildings need backs. Retail districts, especially ones as specialized as this one need a focal point and can't be spread to thin across every street frontage. I have no problem with the interfaces with the public space - especially the focus on Olympic Way. Frankly, this arena will do a better job of interacting with a district than 90% of them in the NHL/NBA.

There something like 6 surface lots sitting there now, most are filled for game nights.

This building will eat up the two biggest ones.

Have you seen the changes in East Village? I'd count on the other ones having building before you know it.

Even if the players say its the best ice in the league Flames fans will say the ice is bad like they do with the dome currently

Shouldn’t the green line eliminate a lot more people from driving? Also, capacity has been reduced by around 1000 from the saddledome. That’s less people potentially taking up parking. Unless I’m mistaken, once the Saddledome is demolished that will turn into even more parking....

The new renders including the surrounding upgrades help but to me, it still looks like a 20-40 year old building that has been renovated with new exterior cladding rather than something new and modern to begin with.
I guess a no-nonsense box with bowl inside is the most cost-effective way to build this - and yet the construction cost has gone up as reported recently.

It's also the best way to future-proof it. As long as they don't do something foolish like build load-bearing elements into the bowl itself, the interior space can be reconfigured to any extent and the outer shell will remain usable.

With proper engineering, this building should still be usable 100 years from now, with the interior turned into a zero-g drone derby pit or whatever it is that people will be doing for amusement in large crowds by then. Or maybe it will just become a supermarket like Maple Leaf Gardens. You couldn't do that with the Saddledome.
