The flowery prose we all love...
Quote:
Symbolism, Meaning and Narrative
The Event Centre design can be perceived as a composition of three elements, in classical architectural terms, Base, Middle and Top. These elements not only come together to form an elegant design composition, but each has been derived from a specific meaning intended to establish the design narrative for the Event Centre.
THE BASE
The base derives its design cues from the natural topography of the site, materials and shapes of a rivers edge or bank. Features of the lower facade include massing of stone and precast that frames smaller openings consistent with the scale of the city Streetscape. The base becomes the strong foundation that supports the middle and upper design elements and contrasts its mass with a complimentary lightness as the building rises out of the site towards the sky.
THE MIDDLE
Just above this foundational base the structure gives way to a clear band of glass that showcases the activity within. Glazed openings allow light and energy inside to be revealed. The middle zone of the elevations allows those inside to take in the spectacular views of the surroundings and the cityscape of Calgary.
THE TOP
Above the middle is a shroud-shaped form resembling a ribbon. This ribbon envelops the performance space of the Event Centre, gently rising from the critical corner of the northwest plaza and wrapping the structure around the east, terminating and pointing toward the neighbouring BMO Centre and Stampede Park to the southwest. Both the curvilinear form of the ribbon and the color of the metal panels represents the flowing nature of the sky.

I like arenas that don't look like arenas.
This doesn't look like an arena.

Looking at the floor plan blueprints: This will take some getting used to: The home bench will now be on the left side (facing the cameras), rather than the right.
The Flames dressing room will be horseshoe shaped.
There will be something called the "Founders Club" at ice level, presumably with a view of the players as they head to the ice, as has become common in newer arenas.
There will also be washrooms on the floor level, so you won't have to climb all the way up if you have floor seats for concerts.

This big thing here, on the left, that looks like a giant corrugated and yet blank wall.

ASUS should sponsor the arena and call it the Heatsink

I generally stay clear of arena fights, but these pictures look pretty good to me. Seems classy and less boring that the previous render.
Looking forward to it.

If I see a Dodge truck blocking the concourse of the new building I'm slashing the tires. I wish I could find the person who decided on that brilliant idea and shout in their face.

As long as the ribbon maintains its geometric pattern semi-transparent nature, that will be a very interesting element and give the building character. If it turns into a stainless steel corrugated mess, it will be an eyesore and the downfall of what could be a cool building.

I want them to put a Red Dodge Ram on a Plinth on the Roof as an homage.

It would've been cool to do something in the aesthetic of the new library. But I guess with most event centers you're usually looking at a metal and concrete monstrosity.

All the latest renders make it look pretty nice. Should blend in well with the area its being built. Will be interested to see the interiors next. So farm way better than that bed pan up in Edmonton.
