Hmmm I don't know about that.
I would say:
Monahan>Smith but depends on health
Hague=Valimaki
Krebs>Corranato

It's close either way and would come down to how the Vegas folks view each player and project the prospects. If they really like Krebs, as they probably do, that tips it to Vegas.

Basing projections on a single season is borderline futile. Progression is not linear - especially for defensemen. Valimaki had a tough year - he thought he would jump from the Finnish league to the NHL and dominate. He learned that wasn't the case. None the less, he has tremendous upside, and all the tools necessary to be a great player. Let's wait and see how this year goes, before we pigeon hole him after one tough year.

His rookie season after not playing for 2 years? Yep, I'm sure we've seen all we're going to see from him.

I wouldn't consider any Dman's first full pro season (shortened season at that) as much of a indicator of their ceiling. And if you want to make a call on Valimaki, fine but Mackey barely played. How can you judge him at this point?

If there’s a first involved it would also lean in the Flames direction. It’s not inconceivable it blows up spectacularly for Calgary, whereas Vegas their floor is likely picking in the 25 OA range.

I don't think he has top pairing potential. That's not to say he couldn't play 2nd pairing minutes.

The post I quoted, said losing Valimaki in a deal for Eichel would hurt. I'm taking the other side of that argument. As the roster, stands the Flames have either Kylington or Mackey to fill that slot on LD. Also keep in mind, Valimaki lost starts to Nesterov last season.

If losing Valimaki in a deal for Eichel is a deal breaker, then the team has really lost the plot.

If Valimaki's the guy that can push this deal over the finish line, you can't say no to that.

I wish there was some indication around what Buffalo is wanting from Calgary. So many random proposals but still no idea if there are a few key pieces and who they are.

Looking at that vegas offer and the comparables, I am starting to think maybe the hold up is Monahan and his NTC (assuming buf is on it). Treliving maybe letting Monahan think about it. Salary definitely needs to move from our side.

Or more likely Buffalo is laughing at these offers. He has at least 4 teams on the line and waiting to see who blinks.

While Monny may be included simply for cap reasons, I doubt he’s a serious piece for Buffalo. He hasn’t proven himself healthy and is two years from UFA.

Will you please give it a rest about Monahan's health, especially when talking about Jack Eichel? Monahan has played more games than Eichel has in the last two seasons. Monahan has played more games that Eichel in every season. If anyone should be concerned about injury prone players, it would be Calgary and with Jack Eichel.

Probably not, but 1D is another spot the Flames need to fill and Valimaki supposedly has that potential although he hasn't shown it yet. Still, it would be a massive miscalculation if he reached his potential with Buffalo after being traded.

Buffalo’s ask from Calgary could be different in that the most valuable piece is in the Smith slot. They might be asking for Tkachuk and three other pieces. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and Buffalo might not think Monahan is very valuable.

Or Kennedy could be out to lunch. All along we’ve heard that Buffalo’s price is prohibitive.

The biggest difference is that Monny has been terrible the last two seasons. He has not played well when injured. He'll need to prove himself healthy and productive before he'll be valued as the 30 goal scorer he was in the past.

I'll stop mentioning Monny's health when everyone stops putting him in trade proposals valuing him as a perennial 30 goal scorer.

Eichel is the guy who's on the market. Teams are free to discount Eichel's value to their hearts content. But there are a number of teams presumably interested in obtaining Eichel's services.

Monahan won’t be winding up in Buffalo if the Flames secure the deal. I have little doubt they are on his NTC and I don’t see why the Sabres would want him on the team anyway.

If the Flames are able to use Monahan for salary it will be to a third team. That is why I think the Eichel trade is a little tough for the Flames. They either need to make a separate trade for cap reasons or find a third team to take Monahan and reroute assets to the Sabres.

Actually, if Buffalo wants Smith, Buffalo could be asking for Lindholm and three assets than Tkachuk. Buffalo wants a centre, right? (If Monahan is disqualified because of the NTC)

Reilly Smith is a winger, 30 years old and a year away from UFA. Lindholm is in a completely different sphere

Buffalo likely doesn’t want Smith but they can’t send out $10M without taking a contract back. Lindholm >>> Smith as well

Smith is not a center so not sure that is what Buffalo wants. All we know is they want futures and are rebuilding.
