Because it matters if you purposefully want to be depressing.
There are cities in Europe with 1/3 of the population of Calgary that I would much rather live in than Chicago, New York or LA.

Calgary may be one of the smallest cities in the league, but one of the cities it's bigger than is Buffalo.
However you slice it, if he was willing to play in Buffalo long-term, Calgary shouldn't be a problem for him. It's not like he's used to playing in Miami or Los Angeles.

Bigger metropolitan areas offer more options for things to do etc.
New York is easily the number 1 UFA destination in the league and I think players are attracted to what the big city lights bring.
Not all players are wired the same. Coleman I believe chose Calgary largely due to the city and what it offers for his family.

It’s about team prestige/history and city reputation. Most hockey players are from a place where winter is a thing, I don’t think many of them really care about that.
I’m sure there’s a feeling to putting on a certain jersey. An original 6 team is something that comes with it’s own panache that other teams can’t replicate and most are located in world reknowned cities. Then there is another tier of teams that are in great cities, but maybe not the team history (PHI, LA, SJ, ANA, VAN). Then another group of teams that are new exciting teams in interesting locations (VGK, NSH, SEA, TBL, FLA). Then there’s a tier of sort of low key slower cities without a lot of international recognition and with spotty team history (CGY, DAL, CAR, MIN, BUF,). Then there’s a group of cities that are on a lot of people’s NTC for various reasons smaller unknown locations with little success history (WPG, CBJ, OTT, AZ).
And of course, no one wants to play in Edmonton.

When we had that rumored deal for Zucker and it was sort of in limbo. lots of Flames fans on my twitter timeline were @ing his wife being like "Calgary? Are the Zuckers coming here? Flames? Zucker to Calgary?" and while they were being friendly, you can see how this might be off putting.
There have been lots of comments by insiders this year saying UFAs don't want to play in Canada because of social media. So i don't think players care so much about metropolitan area, but more this level of uh, fervor.

Zero chance Eichel ever plays for the Sabres again. The amount of bad feelings there is way too high.

But I doubt anyone can argue that monahan is as good as Eichel. That would be even crazy thing to claim
Also we did add Coleman. He’s similar to mangiapane as a 5 on 5 star who doesn’t get much pp time. Also he is great pk guy. Maybe if mangiapane gets moved in the deal dube does not need to replace mangiapane because Coleman will
Dube is also 2 years younger than mangiapane. Even mangiapane wasn’t at 23 was as good as his 25 year old version. Dube still has untapped potential.
I’d prefer dube in the deal over mangiapane but it would not stop me from making the deal if it had to be mangiapane

Jack is being traded to CG4? Is that an inter-dimensional computer graphics team?
At least it’s happening tomorrow and we can get on with life.

Kevyn Adams: Ok, Brad I don't like your package but Terry is being Terry so I am prepared to do this trade if you drop all of the protection you want on the 2022 first rounder.
BT: Can't do that Kevyn. Given Jack's health status, I just can't hand you the first overall in the draft. I'd be run out of town.
Kevyn Adams: Don't worry, you had a chance to talk the doctor and his agents right? He'll be back in a few months! And with Darryl at the helm and your new acquisitions you guys are golden...so just call me when you are ready to do that Brad.
BT: (taps fingers nervously)

I doubt BT is hung up on 1st round protection. He had no problem trading away our 2018 1st with no protection.

Agreed. If you make the trade for Eichel, you’re likely assuming that your team won’t be in the running for the top pick in the draft.

What does that matter to a player? It's good for the teams local TV rights but if I'm a player I would rather less urban congestion outside of the city.

If a first rounder is included it HAS to be protected. If the Flames give up any of our top 6 forwards and Eichel doesn't play, this team is going to get a high pick. I would rather 2 protected first rounders than 1 unprotected first rounder.

Has there been anything said about Jack Eichel coming from the Flames? So far it's a Friedman rumor.
I haven't listened to the fan lately either, maybe Brad could make a statement or something if he hasn't already, they're probably on summer vacation now.

Even if Eichel doesn't play and the Flames give up Monahan or Tkachuk, the Pacific looks so crappy that I don't think the Flames finish much lower than 20th. If Markstrom sucks than I can see it.

Would the team finish worse than it did last year, which was 13th. With the new lotto rules, you can only move up max 10 spots. You have to think if the trade goes through Eichel plays a large portion of the season.

There hasn't been anything concrete about Eichel going anywhere besides insider info on asks and what teams have been in and out of the conversation. Mostly just speculation to keep people interested during the offseason.

A statement to say what? And prior to any deal in place what good would a public statement do?
