That second tweet made me laugh. Somebody is friends with somebody whose kid plays for the Sabres and is the random player on the Sabres who Kevyn Adams discusses possible Eichel destinations with........ok. First tweet said sources plural, but the second tweet clarifies it is just this well connected player telling his dad who told his friend who posted it on Twitter.

According to Brooks in this scenario Drury would have the green light to make the Rangers the following offer:

- 20 year old forward Kaapo Kakko, the 2nd overall pick at the 2019 NHL Entry Draft

- 21 year old centerman Filip Chytil, the 21st overall pick at the 2017 NHL Entry draft or 21 year old forward Vitali Kravtsov, the 9th overall pick at the 2018 NHL Entry Draft.

- One of 20 year old defenseman Zac Jones, picked 68th overall at the 2019 NHL Entry Draft, 20 year old defenseman Matthew Robertson, selected 49th overall at the 2019 NHL Entry Draft, or a first round draft pick.

This could effectively work out to be a whopping three first round picks for the Buffalo Sabres, but of course that will depend on how much value they see in the Rangers prospect pool. I suspect that the idea of retaining 50% of Eichel's salary might be too tough a pill for the Sabres to swallow, but it's not like they intend to field a competitive team in the near future if they are trading away the best player they have had in years.

Yeah, people forget the Sabres are the urgent ones here. I expect the reason their first round of demands were shrugged off is because nobody is willing to include blue-chip prospects and young players. So LA isn’t giving up Byfield, Anaheim isn’t giving up Zegras or Drysdale, the Rangers aren’t giving up Lafreniere or Kakko, and the Habs won’t give up Suzuki or Caufield. Buffalo is going to have to circle back to lower offers.

There is no chance the Pegulas would pay $5 million a year for the next 5 years for Eichel to play on another team. I would go as far to say no ownership group in the NHL would do that. No matter how good the return would be .

I think that Buffalo messed this up a bit. Everyone knows that Eichel can not be brought back. That rift is too big.


A 'sweepstakes' only works if there are a lot of suitors. Did most of them really drop out? It seems likely as they filled their cap space. Of course, cap can always be sent out in a trade if need be, but it sure seems that less teams are now 'in it', or have gone in a different direction.


We also know that it is only natural for Buffalo to want to ship him away from the division for sure, and probably out of the conference. It becomes a distraction. Buffalo would probably be willing to accept a lesser offer (as long as it wasn't a bad offer) to get him further away.



I think it is going to be more difficult to get what they have stated that they are looking for in their trade. I don't know how many suitors there really are, retaining sufficient money on the deal makes it more difficult for Buffalo to then compete themselves in 2 or 3 years when they *should* be competitive again (again, should can not be over-emphasized given their history).



He is only going to the Rangers if the offer from there is substantially better.


I hope that some offers get leaked like what (eventually) happened in the Lindros sweepstakes.

If nothing happens with Eichel, I wouldn't be opposed to this

Perunovich immediately becomes our top prospect, I like him a lot

I'd prefer to keep Tkachuk but I still think a shake-up will be needed

That's a realistic offer for Tkachuk.

Someone posted earlier that the Flames have no untouchables. May be the case, but if there is one it's Tkachuk. I think it would take a tonne to acquire him.
