We have sorely missed the Tunnel of Terror. Who here didn't delight in the BOA knowing Hemsky was about to be smeared 20 times? Is Zadorov a Regehr? I don't know as I haven't really watched him much outside of Looch feeding him a glove sammy. But I would certainly love it if he was our next Robyn.

What was the context behind Lucic punching him? I don't really like those types of plays, but was Zadorov taunting someone or something like that?

He crunched Czarnik pretty heavily. Lucic challenged him to fight and Zadorov didn't engage with him, so Lucic punched him in the face.

Anyone see any estimates on what His contract might look like? Is this a 4mm x 3 years kind of a thing?

Not sure if worth more then qualifying offer. Squat for points. I think what they don’t want is a single year arbitration ruling bringing him to UFA Bet closer to 3.5m

Honestly, I'm not sure. I think that Regehr had the better hockey IQ. I thought he could read the play developing better. Personally, I thought the only thing stopping Regehr offensively was him not wanting to work on the offensive side of the puck. Again, I think it's a bit early to compare Zadorov to the best shut down D we ever had.

I think that his play would depend a lot on who he is paired with. Again, that's just an opinion but I think that he could make an elite shutdown pairing with Tanev. I also think he would work quite well on a pair with Valimaki. In my opinion, he would struggle playing with Andersson. That's because I see most pucks being dumped in Andersson's corner, and Andersson letting the forward get to the puck first so he can staple him to the corner. That's where I can see that pairing being hemmed in their own zone for long periods of time.

As for the offensive side of the puck, Zadorov has a pretty good hard shot. I think he can improve with confidence, but those are the rose colored glasses I'm wearing. Don't expect him to walk the blue line or anything, or any offensive plays except shooting the puck. One play I can see him benefiting from is when Gaudreau goes skating behind the opponents net, and finds the open D sneaking in from the point (It was one of his favorite plays with Wideman, and Hamilton). That's a play he benefited from while playing for the Avalanche.

I'm not an analytics type of guy and go mostly off what I see with my own eyes. Zadorov, was a defenseman that I always thought would look great on the Flames. I love those big, rugged, defensive types that make it miserable on the other team. Welcome to, Calgary!

Dobber Hockey predicts a cap hit for Zadorov @ $2.675 m. That seems a little low to me, but maybe he clocks in close to his QO.

Zadorov seems like kind of player that would benefit from signing as long of a term as possible. Just my guess, but it doesn't seem like many all-defense defenseman get great contracts into their 30s. I could see him taking a lower AAV to get a longer term.

He has been paid $3.2 million in each of the last two seasons on one-year contracts. I can't see him agreeing to a pay cut on a longer term.

When he was a prospect he was thought to have some offence in him. He did have an underused heavy shot.

Does that Dobber AAV relate to any specific term? A multi year contract would buy the Flames multiple UFA years, and I think that would cost +$3m. Maybe right around the QO figure.

4 × 3.5 sounds about right for Zadorov

As an aside, Zadorov also mentioned in a Russian interview during the playoffs that he started the season with his arm not rehabbing to 100% in terms of it's strength. He attributed it to the shorter break in between seasons. He expects this off-season to bey key in getting his arm back to 100%. He said that getting back to the usual NHL schedule/rythm will get everything back to speed.

When asked about a potential trade to WPG, he said to not believe in fake news, and that he wouldn't go anywhere(not sure which way he meant it).

The interview if anyone's interested(in russian).

PS: if you guys want there's another long interview in russian, where he discusses everything from training to contract negotiations with CHI. The interview was posted only 3 days ago. And there he said that it was a very unprofessional journalist that wrote he was asking for $6M a season. He said that he knew what he was worth from comparable players, but that is definitely not $6M a season.

I think this is a really good fit for both Zadorov and Calgary.

I think Calgary has been trying to get bigger and stronger, and under Sutter specifically, a better defensive team. Zadorov is good defensively (for the most part). I think this will work out well for Calgary.

I think where Zadorov is concerned, working under Sutter should take him to the next level. He has the size and agility to become a premier defencemen in this league. In a way, he is one of those freaks of nature. I think Sutter will steady him.

I think working with Lucic and even Ritchie might help Zadorov. Looking over at his fight history, he sure loses a lot of fights. It is no wonder that he didn't fight Lucic in the video that has been posted. It is no wonder that he wouldn't fight Bennett in the playoffs either - I think Bennett would have tuned him. He looks like me in the 6th grade when I first put boxing gloves on and got my butt kicked by guys half my size - the second you get 'afraid' of getting hit, you start turning away, and that's when you really get beat up. Don't want to get hit in the face? Fight like Zack "Huggy Bear" Stortini (seriously). Clinch up and hug the guy. It is hard for you to hit him with any power, but it also becomes harder for him to hit you too. Don't look away - that's when you can really get hurt too. Lucic I am sure will teach him the finer points of fighting. The only fight that I saw him winning was against Lowry, but he lost against Benn, McQuaid and even Phaneuf. Maybe he has been getting better - I just wanted to take a sampling of his fights.

The Regehr comparison is a natural one. I agree that what sets Regehr apart from Zadorov is Regehr's very high IQ. With that being said, I don't think Zadorov suffers from a poor IQ - he's just not Regehr. The other difference that I can see is that Zadorov is way 'meaner'. Regehr was fairly gentle in his first few seasons, almost as if he didn't know his own size. I don't know if Sutter helped him discover that side of the game more, or perhaps it was just him taking a while to adjust.

Otherwise, there is a lot of comparisons here. Regehr wasn't much of a fighter either. They both have hard shots, and neither one of them used it well. They both are very physical and prioritize defence. They are also both big men who have really good agility for their size.

I have been clamouring for an offensive defencemen as I think this team is going to have an issue generating offence from the back-end. However, I do think that this is the next best thing - getting a 'monster' back there to add to the new identity. Zadorov at least fills a hole on this team, and makes this team better defensively and physically.

I think it is a nice add, and I also think that there is some untapped potential there. I think Sutter will help him, and I also think that we could start seeing a bit more offence (probably nothing dramatic, but an uptick). I'm a fan of this move, quite honestly.

An unprofessional journalist? That's unpossible!

I would almost be more comfortable with Zadorov for 3-4 years to establish some Russian presence in the organization.

Russia produces too many quality players for our last notable Russian regular to be Oleg Saprykin.

We’re not their first choice obviously, so we can’t expect them to make the trek here if nobody else speaks the language.

Robin Regehr was thought of as a Canadian Olympic caliber type dman.

Of course, at a time when dman could clutch and grab.

But Zadorov isn’t in the same league as Regehr. But few are.

Zadorov is more of a run of the mill type dman best suited to 5-6, but able to play 3-4 on a team when required.

Regehr was a solid D man in his time.

Curious, could a player get to 1000 games while scoring at less than 0.2 points per game in today’s nhl? I feel like a guy like that gets squeezed out now.
