Eichel would have no motivation to do that. What it would do though, is call his bluff. If he really thinks getting the surgery puts him back on the ice as quick as they say, he wouldn't have anything to worry about.

There’s not really a “bluff” to be called here. He thinks the organization is wrong and wants autonomy over how to proceed with a procedure on his own body. The relationship is severed. There’s no playing in Buffalo.

I'm amazed anyone here realistically thinks the Flames have a shot at Eichel.

Why don’t they?
They have the cap room. They can afford to spend the assets. They can likely offer a better package than anyone is rumoured to have done so far.
Now, do they lack the balls to actually get this done? History says yes.
But all they need to do to secure this player is make it worth Buffalo’s while.

Sign Parise and Chiasson.
What’s impossible about that?

Why lol?
They meet a lot of the criteria and can put in a competitive offer at the juncture they're at.
If you're going to be a holier than thou wet blanket at least back it up with some solid reasoning.

Ya, that would be like if Calgary traded our young franchise talent to the Oilers or Canucks.

What amazes me is that so many people think the Flames have no realistic options except (a) trade for Eichel and nobody else, whatever it takes, whatever it costs, or (b) blow up the whole team and rebuild.

Exactly - they’re not doing it. Especially when it’s the player who wants out, not a situation where “oh, we can get Draisaitl for Tkachuk” fever dream

Again it's as if you exist here without reading anyone else's comments.

I do like to amuse myself with the notion of McDavid just totally John Tavares'ing the No Goods and then signing with a division rival.
Probably Vegas, because #### them, but would be still funny.

Exactly. NY teams are likely all out due to that.
I think the teams that are still in it are:
Anaheim
LA
Minnesota
Las Vegas
Calgary
Montreal

Jay Random (a) fine with Flames staying the same for another 10-15 years.

Friedman reported that the owner wants him shipped out west. The owner doesn’t want the fan base being constantly reminded. Unless someone pays a premium, I doubt Montreal. That would be in division.

L.A. and Anaheim bidding against each other works in Buffalo's favour. Each team will probably go an extra mile to prevent the other from improving or raising the price to level that at least hurts.

Not really. It would be more like if the Flames made a big trade with Winnipeg. They're not traditional Division rivals (they were in the same Division last season because of the realignment) and although in the same Conference, they're not likely to have a significant impact on one another in terms of playoff positioning or direct head-to-head competition.
There is a small overlap in media markets, but that's it really.

Because the posters who live for negativity about this team say so. Eichel won't come here. No players want to come here. Our players are worth nothing. Our assets are worth nothing. Our GM is the worst GM in pro sports history and completely stupid. The team has no chance to compete this year and should have the word MEDIOCRITY in capital letters in the home dressing room.

Because Eichel is the only possible way to improve the team, amirite? You prove my point.

Whatever b option is out there won't return you a player as good as Eichel, and likely would require subtracting a high end piece like Tkachuk. Eichel is the most efficient single move to improving the team, and Buffalo is primarily looking for futures, which plays very much in the interest of the Flames if they're intent on making a run with this group under Sutter.
Highly unlikely another deal readily exists out there that improves them in the same way without hurting the current roster. These types of impact players are just rarely available, and at what will likely be a discounted cost.
If you can name a different potential move that helps the current roster on the same way, I'd love to hear it.

The prices a lot of CPers want to pay do not represent any kind of discounted cost. Buffalo is reportedly asking for futures equivalent to four first-round picks. I keep seeing offers that include a core player, two younger roster players, one or two prospects who were taken in the first round, AND two first-round picks – with an added exhortation to Treliving to pay even more if necessary.
That would be an overpay even if Eichel were in perfect health. And it most definitely does hurt the current roster, since you're subtracting three pieces to add one and then, apparently, trusting that the hockey gods or someone will wave a wand and replace the depth you just lost.
But this is the kind of thinking you get when you develop tunnel vision and convince yourself that there is only one possible solution to a complex problem.
