The closest equivalent move I can think of where it backfired is Karlsson to San Jose. They went for it, it clearly blew up and now they suck.

Karlsson was older and had a bigger contract so you could say the risk was higher there, San Jose also had a longer track record of being good but they were aging

If anything Jack Eichel is the key to uniting the rebuild vs compete group. It is a move that transforms the high end of this team so it can give those who only see a rebuild as a way out a different perspective because this team would have that elite talent that section of the fanbase wants to tank for.

Those who want to compete can see an elite player coming here and those people tend to be more optimistic about the team and adding Eichel can turn this into one of the very best teams in the league especially if it is Monahan+Futures as the cost

I dont see why Buffalo would want a protected 1st. That projects to be a 3rd liner in 4 years most likely for them. Not exactly an enticing piece to trade their franchise player.

Their goalie also turned into a pumpkin, and their stalwart perrenial Olympian LD forgot how to play good.

It was also a chips-in on the Thornton/Pavelski window.

The interesting question is where they'd be if they didn't make that trade...it's easy to say they'd end up with Stutzle, but there are a lot of other things that might have happened instead (ie. they use some of those assets to acquire a different player).

The Karlsson trade is also an example where OTT got value from downside trade protection...if it were unprotected OTT would have picked 29th in 2019 instead of Stutzle (and SJ wouldn't have been able to use the 2019 1st to acquire Kane)

Karlsson in his late 20s with 1 year left until UFA I don't think is a comparable at all. Seguin is probably the best recent comparable but he hadn't quite broken out yet when traded. That is one of the worst trades in league history though so don't think I'd look at that deal for comparable compensation.

This doesn’t make sense. There’s nothing defeatist about deploying a strategy to build through youth and rebuild the core. It’s an admittance that the current group doesn’t have what it takes…which is pretty obvious by now, short of a miracle Cinderella run.

Anyway, all for naught. There won’t be a rebuild, so we might as well swing for the fences with opportunities like Eichel and hope for the best.

Gaudreau is in his late 20s with 1 year left until UFA.

Tkachuk could be the Mark Stone equivalent. Monahan the Duchene.

I don't either. I think an alternative both teams might consider is an option on the 22 or 23 1st rounder at the Flame's discretion, or something like that.

My guess is the ask in return from Buffalo will have too much risk attached to it and nothing will happen.

Gotta think there’s some resolution on this in the next week; training camps are about a month away and this whole thing has become quite contentious and optically looks terrible on the Sabres the longer they let this fester.

Could Eichel just get the surgery he wants? What can Buffalo do? Void the contract?

If Buffalo voids it, doesn't that make Eichel a UFA? Does Eichel get a similar contract in the open market? He's got 5 years left at $10 million per. Could he get that on the open market as a UFA if Buffalo voids the contract?

It would be a be a big F you to Buffalo, they'd lose a lot of assets but they also clear $10 million in cap hit for a long time.

Would be incredibly bad asset management by Buffalo to let it get that far.

I doubt he'd walk away from $50 million because I really don't think he'd get that much on the open market right now. Teams would want to see him fully recovered before committing that kind of money.

But if you trade for him, you are committing to it AND you are losing player assets.

I mean, if the Flames are ok with Eichel's surgery, I'd prefer this route. Flames only lose the money with the cap hit going on LTIR anyways and you don't lose the prospects and draft picks.

On the open market, you get a few bidders and he can probably get close to $50 million with how dumb GMs are.

You won’t know how successful the surgery is until he plays. There is virtually zero chance that the surgery will be deemed unsuccessful upon completion. So with that, I would suggest Eichel could probably get more than the $10MM he currently gets, especially with the possibility of putting him on LTIR if there are complications when he starts playing.

And then Buffalo would sue him and more than likely win. What can be done medically is covered in all contracts.
