Don’t spoil the party.

Package three of your better players and a few 1st round picks.

Eichel can win games from his hospital bed.

Quick question... seeing as they are his medical records, and he’s obviously gotten his own testing from his doctors, can he not just release those records himself to an interested team to move this trade along?

I think that may get him in hot water. Team is the only one that can address injuries in public.

I think, could be wrong

https://podcast.sportsnet.ca/31-thou...c-replacement/

31 Thoughts Podcast for July 31st with special guest Dr. Chad Prusmack, the Neurosurgeon who made the artificial disk surgery recommendation to Eichel.

Quote:
Dr. Chad Prusmack is a neurosurgeon based in Colorado who has provided Jack Eichel with a recommendation to correct a herniated disc in his neck by proceeding with artificial disc replacement surgery. Jeff and Elliotte chat with Dr. Prusmack about the procedure, the recovery and the risk associated with the surgery, and why this surgery would be more beneficial long-term rather than an anterior cervical discectomy with fusion (ACDF).

Below is the research addressed by Dr. Chad Prusmack in the podcast.
(1) Orthopaedic Journal of Sports Medicine: Return to Play After Anterior Cervical Discectomy and Fusion in Professional Athletes
(2) National Library of Medicine: Return to Sports After Cervical Total Disc Replacement
(3) BioMed Central: Comparison of cervical disc arthroplasty and anterior cervical discectomy and fusion for the treatment of cervical disc degenerative diseases on the basis of more than 60 months of follow-up: a systematic review and meta-analysis
(4) National Library of Medicine: Comparison of the Clinical and Radiographic Results Between Cervical Artificial Disk Replacement and Anterior Cervical Fusion: A 6-Year Prospective Nonrandomized Comparative Study
(5) Medtronic Spinal: Chris Weidman [VIDEO]

The doctor is adamant that a fusion is a poor choice for an athlete. He talks about how the fusion literally makes natural awareness of your body positioning tough, so the movement to take a slapshot would be different for example.

He also says someone with a fusion is much more likely to require more fusions up and down the spine as time goes on.

Certainly sounds like a disk replacement is the way to go according to this surgeon.

Man, an artificial disk... there's no way I'd include an unprotected 2022 1st rounder in a trade for Eichel at this point. Maybe a 2023. Sure they claim he could play hockey this year, but if we do trade for him, I want him to take it sloooowww coming back from injury. Considering the Flames would need to ship out talent in order to clear cap space, this increases the likelihood we miss the playoffs and end up in the lottery.

Monahan, 2023 1st.

Anything more than that and I start asking the Sabres to throw in future 2nd/3rd rounders to balance the risk.

Kid is gonna get a fake disk in his neck.

Yeesh, the surgeon says a fusion would mean realistically a 25% chance of another fusion every 10 years, whereas the disk replacement is a one and done procedure because it by definition allows the same mobility to exist instead of increasing the stress above and below the rigid fused portion of the neck.

After hearing the difference between the 2 options when it comes to realistic long term comfort, I can see why Eichel's side is pushing for the disk replacement.

Fusion alters biomechanics of the spine. This is usually not noticeable for the patient, but the changes in mechanics results in a slightly elevated risk of an adjacent disc degenerating (a domino effect). This risk is reduced by using an artificial disc which preserves mobility, if even at a level that the patient doesn’t notice. That’s the primary (and perhaps only real) rationale for doing artificial disc over fusion.

I’ve oversimplified to some extent, but hopefully this helps clear the air.
Thank you for providing expert opinion. This is why CP rocks.

Last time we did, we had rotating Captains, so let's do it again. I say Backlund lifts it first because of tenure.

As much as I want a franchise centre, this uncertainty is not worth it, the reality is that he won't be the same player he was before, we have a better chance to make the playoffs next year with our current team then to gut it for a very seriously injured player

Is the plan then to wait for a young, talented #1 center signed long-term - with no warts or risks involved at all - to become available for a reasonable price?

Or to just ride out the dying days of this current core in utter mediocrity until their value decays to nothing with no playoff success to show for it?

Which of these scenarios would you like?

Any kind of disc surgery is always a last resort so his neck is in pretty bad shape I would guess.

If we want a boom or bust gamble that would move this team into the next phase, this is it. If that end result is the dismantling of this old core and rebuilding, so be it — but maybe, just maybe a player of his caliber would finally get us over the hump. Either way I think practically the whole fanbase is ready for a major shift in the team. Swing for the fences, we've got nothing to lose here.
