There is work to do, but at least he hasn't bought into the madness.

Even if this season doesn't work out, at least the Flames aren't in terrible shape cap and contract-wise.
I don't love the Coleman contract but he's going to be a good add for at least half the term. The only think keeping me from giving him two thumbs up for the offseason is the lack of clarity of the Gaudreau situation and no powerplay QB on the roster. I really think Gaudreau should have been signed or moved before Wednesday as he can now ride things out to free agency if he pleases.

I think Gaudreau needs to be on a line with at least one other player good at zone entries.

The fact the core remains in tact should concern everyone

Coleman is great as a support player for a contender.

It’s very clear the league has learned how to shut down Johnny easily if he has no help

You suspiciously remind me of Resolute14. Was wondering why he was no longer around spreading bad takes...

When I thought the team was in it's window of contention I was concerned but now that it's closed I don't care nearly as much. The timing is perfect for things to go sideways in the next two seasons with two solid looking draft classes on deck. If they perform above expectations and have a Cinderella season, great. If they remain lottery players in the next few drafts, that's also great.

Remember when people said the league had Johnny figured out after he had a rough first year in his new contract with 61pts. What happened after that? Oh ya 84pts then 99pts

Flames seem to have done enough to have some improvement with their moves this offseason. They definitely will not be in the bottom third of the league and with a little luck may be in the top third of the league. Coleman definitely helps this year and if he hurts the team it will be in 4-5 years. Management seems to have decided to give the core one more chance this year. I think something like this offseason was what most fans thought would take place this offseason.

Pretty hard to be successful in the NHL without help.

What do you mean live on that glory?

You claim the league figured him out after the 99pt season and I am simply giving an example when that was said in the past but he was able to continue to put up career numbers.

Ultimately I agree he needs some help but I also think playing with Lindholm and Tkachuk is more help than he had the past couple years playing with a broken down Monahan and some various scrub

Right. But like I suggested, the same GM in that time? no.
https://www.capfriendly.com/buyout-history
Total cap hit in buy outs in the Treliving era for all NHL teams (2014-15 season into the futures)

NYR $60,233,331
MIN $50,605,131
TBL $44,984,845
BUF $39,483,333
PHI $38,855,557
NSH $25,177,778
NYI $24,971,700
CBJ $24,516,667
NJD $24,400,000
EDM $23,183,333
ANA $23,055,555
FLA $22,500,000
CAR $21,833,333
TOR $21,666,667
DET $21,233,333
OTT $20,666,667
SJS $18,800,000
ARI $15,733,333
MTL $15,435,714
VAN $15,033,333
CGY $13,758,333
LAK $11,000,000
COL $9,816,667
BOS $6,866,667
PIT $6,500,000
DAL $5,966,667
CHI $3,791,667
WPG $1,750,000
WSH $916,667
STL $0

20 NHL teams with more buyout dollars spent (cap terms), the average is $20.4M or $19.8M if you include Vegas.

Calgary's buyouts ...

O'Brien, Shane - Inherited
Raymond, Mason - His Signing
Murphy, Ryan - Acquired to Buy Out
Bouma, Lance - His Signing
Brouwer, Troy - His Signing
Stone, Michael - His Signing

All in all Calgary in pretty decent shape on this front.

That's not necessarily a tribute to the GM, as the ownership has to agree to these, so perhaps there would have been more.

But nothing there to suggest he's painted himself into a corner with buyouts compared to most NHL GMs.

Yeah, the Flames have $1.5M of dead cap-space in 21/22, and $0 of dead cap-space in 22/23.

There simple isn't much to dislike about that.

Middling teams with some decent young pieces but no tap talent make the most sense to me. MIN, CBJ, CGY

Or of course Vegas (a very good team lacking top C's).

I'm not sure trading big assets to blow your window open is ever the right move (...if you can land a Chara or Hossa as a UFA that's another story). It's future ELCs out and messes with your cap future...it happened in CGY and Hamilton was a lot cheaper than JE.

Silly idea:

Benning and Poile were. But of course, this is like rationalizing our failures as not being as bad as EDM.

This seems to include amnesty buyouts, which didn't actually count against the cap, and weren't necessarily done for short-term considerations (but recapture concerns, etc.)
