It sure does remind me of many of the buildings at U of C in the 80’s and 90’s.

Maybe some context would help you in how to allocate your displeasure.

HOK has designed some modern looking buildings though such as the Mercedes Benz Stadium in Atlanta.

Yeah, it appears to actually have windows into the arena bowl, which I believe would be a first for the NHL.
Years ago, I attended a presentation from one of the engineers who worked on the Olympic Oval and he said that one of their biggest design challenges was finding a way to incorporate windows into the design to allow natural light into the building for the vast majority of the time that it wasn't hosting major sporting events, but to still be able to block off the light during events so it didn't distract the skaters or screw up the lighting for the tv cameras.
Most arenas get around the problem by not having any windows in the seating bowl.

HKS. They also did the Cowboys and Colts stadiums as well as the new stadium in Los Angeles. They also did the new stadium in Regina.
They did the arena in Dallas (the company is based in Dallas), but their specialty seems to be the large stadiums.
HOK and Populous are the big players in the arena game. One or the other have had a hand in almost all the arenas in the NHL and NBA. Populous was originally spun-off from HOK.

It's funny, playing hockey in the Oval there are times when the light is right in your eyes and quite distracting...

Not to mention the distraction from olympic calibre athletes circling the ice while I float and suck wind at the far blue line.

Indeed, that's why I would have a little more confidence than judging based on the overly simplistic early render.
Though, that stadium was 1.6B. So you can see what difference an extra billion dollars makes.

Still early, but based on what I see so far this is a huge letdown. Compared to the architecturally creative Saddledome, this looks like an Amazon warehouse. The early artistic renderings blow this trash out of the water. This design has zero creativity amd is uninspired, lazy, dark, bland, uninviting, sterile, etc. It looks cheap and doesn’t match the architectural quality and uniqueness of the library, BMO Center, and Studio Bell that surround it. What should have been the ultimate Center piece, it looks like a cheap after thought. I know the renderings need to be refined and changes will occur, but if the Flames botch this (since they have control now) it will just be another reason to abandons this ####ty franchise. Sounds dramatic, but this team hasn’t given me a single reason to believe in them since 2004. So disappointed with what has been presented so far.

From some angles Studio Bell looks just like a cheap big black square wall. You have to see it from due south to get it.

Studio Bell is okay, but far from CP's preferred concept out of the options we had either.

I usually only get to see it when driving west on 9th Ave. From that angle, it looks like a good headquarters for the North Korean secret police.

If the new arena is sponsored by Scotiabank, it's hard to guess what it might be called. There's already the Scotiabank Arena in Toronto and Scotiabank Centre in Halifax, plus Ottawa used to be Scotiabank Place. If they want it to be unique, that probably means those three are out.
I'd say it's a safe bet it won't be something unique like the Corral or Saddledome because it's too easy for people to just drop the sponsor's name when talking about it. No one, who isn't being paid to do so, ever refers to the Saddledome with the sponsor's name. On the other hand, when the name is just Sponsor Name Centre/Arena/Place, people have to say the sponsor's name when talking about the arena.
Going into the 2021-22 season, in the NHL, there are 14 buildings named "Centre/Center", 14 named "Arena", 2 named "Garden", 1 "Place", and 1 "Saddledome".
It's interesting that with the Islanders moving into their new arena this season, there are no longer any buildings named "Coliseum" in the NHL. There are also no Forums. The NBA has 2 Forums and 2 Fieldhouses to go along with the usual assortment of Arenas and Centers.
If Scotiabank does end up being the sponsor, I could see it being the Scotiabank Forum or Scotiabank Coliseum to avoid reusing one of their existing/previous names.

How about the "Scotiabank Mutual Funhouse"

Look at the Rogers sponsored buildings: There's Rogers Arena in Vancouver, Rogers Place in Edmonton, and Rogers Centre in Toronto.

Based on these renders it might be the Scotiabank Vault.
