and you guys are way too defensive about Gio the player. He just plain sucked after the Norris winning season.
He is still prob the best person/human Flame Alum after Lanny. I want him back in Calgary as soon as he is done playing as the Flame's Ambassador.

So much data disagrees with that statement.

Not what I was asking. He's never even been in the playoffs. You should be hating him right now.

But that's ok. I get overly defensive when people criticize Johnny too.. haha

I'm not defensive about Gio, despite my handle. I advocated having him on the exposure list pretty much a couple weeks into Tanev's tenure here. I'd say the same thing if it was Backlund leaving, and if he wore a C.
Tell me who, in your opinion, is a good captain. Iggy had 3 series wins, all in one year. TB won the cup with their captain on the shelf for the whole time.

Bull####!!!!
Our former captain was just as good as all the Captains we've had .
This extended into our alumni and ownership who UNPAID continue to give back to the community giving thousands of dollars and countless time.
Dont discount what you don't see. ....thats really unfortunate you have such a dull view.

Really don't get it.
I mean I get it when Ricardo went after him, as he's always trying to find something that will doom the Flames. But I don't get that from you other than the Giordano angle.
|
Hey what did Janet Jackson say? What have you done for me lately?
and come on Bingo. You gave him an "above average" rating for the season after the Norris? There is no way he was anything close to average.

Why? i was on the Gio train when everyone and their dog was a Phaneuf lover. Never wanted him to goto the KHL and was super happy when he came back. He was the frigging ultimate warrior for the first 10 years here. but then you know... he turned into a frog after the Norris season.

How about 2 goals in 45 games on the PP while getting 1st PP time for the entire stretch?
and both goals were wide shots that were deflected in off of the opposing dman.

Ryan O'Reilly. Never won a PO series. Went to the Blues and won the cup. Now he's the captain.

He's a "defense"man.
Not an "offence"man.
Luckily there are deeper dives available than playoff wins (in a team sport) and powerplay goals.

PP goals are not indicative of a good defenseman. If they were Brad Richards and Laine would be considered great D-men
There might be a deeper dive than the playoffs.... I guess that would be the Olympics and the Canada - Russia series from 1972 and the Canada Cups 1976 thru 1991.
Try to name an important D-man that did not have great playoff moments. Randy Carlye is the closest one that comes to mind. A Norris trophy winner that never was a playoff hero or at least an important player on a winning playoff team All the Norris winners outside Gio , Caryle and Adam Fox were playoff hero's at some point

It's a team sport.
I don't assume a team falling short is on one player.
If you watch Giordano year over year do you honestly see something that he left in the tank in an effort to make the team better and win?
Led them in ice time, points from the blueline, led the blueline corps in shot prevention, almost every single underlying stat until Tanev came around (Hamilton for a spell).
Hits hard, faces the top opposition, will fight.
The Flames have many reasons for not winning in the playoffs, and to hang it on any one player is silly. To hang it on the heart and soul player is just downright foolish.

I can pretty much guess that he tops the players in gym time. There's a bunch of younger guys who could do with more training off season. Part of what Sutter calls being a pro.

So you are saying Zadorov is special and young so we should pay him even he has not shown that he is more than an average dman?

You were the one claiming his skill set is common. So name the guys. And yes, it costs more to nail down a 26 year old RFA D than an aging UFA who was cut loose from his last team.

Honestly I think Treliving wanted to talk dollars with an RFA instead of getting into a chase with the UFA market that has all the leverage.
Probably better players to sign yesterday, but likely to get them signed it's silly term and dollars.
This way he can play some hardball and has more leverage.

Re: comments about Gio
I think the Captain label is more of a burden to a player than a measurable help to the team. Leadership should come from ALL of the vets on a team. During my guys cup runs, it was acknowledged that one of the most important guys in the room, rarely even wore the A until 2017, and that was Seabrook.
Also I think paying for an intangible, like "leadership" is often overpaid. Now I do love Toews, on my team, but, I think that the equivalent money spent to Kane has been money better spent, in that Kane has shown demonstrable statistical improvement to linemates. The same is much harder to directly attribute to Toews' "leadership."

I like how in Staples latest propaganda piece, he actually refers to Tyson Barrie as an "Attacking Blueliner"; even he can't refer to Barrie as a defenseman.

He probably just couldn't figure out if it's spelled "defenseman" or "defenceman" and just went with an easy alternative.
