Crazy because they could in theory, but this team is so perfectly mediocre that it's either a rebuild or a couple pieces from being great.

We have $12.9M in space right now. Moving Backlund for picks (as mentioned in my post) would give us $18,275,000. Adding Eichel's $10M leaves us with $8.275M to sign Zadorov and re-sign Dube, Gawdin, Valimaki, Kylington and Mackey. I think it's doable.

Keep Backlund. Move Monohan.

Well if that's the case, then trading Eichel without taking back a contract would put them almost $20M under the floor. Sounds to me like they'd have to take a contract back as part of the package.

|
LTIR is never subtracted from the cap, it's only shown that way on the sites that show these things to make it easier for people to understand.
For the official cap calculations, the player's full contract value counts as part of the team's cap payroll. The only thing that LTIR space does is allow the team exceed the cap up to the amount of the injured player's cap hit.
If a team is under the cap, they won't put the player on LTIR because there is no actual relief.
On CapFriendly, they aren't showing Buffalo using any LTIR room. They're almost $8 million below the floor with his $10 million cap hit included. If they trade him away, they're going to need to add a lot of salary just to reach the floor.

Kent Wilson tweeted 45mins ago that the rumored ask from Vegas for Eichel was Krebs, Hague, Smith and a 1st, so he says the comparable with the Flames would be;
Monahan
Valimaki
Zary
1st Round Pick

Had an idea!

My guess is Brad knows the ask was high, and that other GMs weren't going to give in. So he has waited it out.
If we give up Zary, Valimaki, Monahan + 1st, I would call that a steal.
Eichel would be the best #1 center the Flames have had in 25 years and he would immediately make Johnny better.

As long as the pick is top 10 protected, I’d do that.

I do it even without protection. Sutter's team is at worst going to be on the low end of the playoff bubble even without Eichel for half a season, and nowhere near the top-two of the Draft Lottery.

If you had to choose, would you rather give Buffalo Pelletier, Zary, or Wolf? Would one would you insist on keeping?

Backlund isn't getting traded, he still brings alot to this team. 200ft game, one of the best shut down guys who can bring some offense, still a strong skater. If anyone's in trade talks, it's Monahan before Backlund.

Would rather keep Zary. His offensive skill gives him a higher ceiling than Pelletier.

Zary is the keeper
You trade Wolf for sure if you get the choice but they just got Levi

Yeah, not all 1sts are equal. The players/prospects involved look similar, but the Flames 1st is likely going to be much more valuable than the Vegas 1st.

I'd give them all 3 if that's what they want
