The one thing I do think though, is Treliving & Sutter covet defensemen. If there is an Eichel deal, I would be surprised if Valimaki is included.

For me, I would give futures for Eichel and trade Monahan for futures.
Top 9:
Gaudreau-Eichel-Coleman
Tkachuk-Lindholm-Mangiapane
Lucic-Backlund-Dube

If it doesn't fit under the cap but futures is what gets it done, you trade Monahan or Tkachuk to another team and recoupe a few picks/prospects or maybe an NHL ready player who's still on an ELC

Your claim was specific, mine wasn’t. If feeling good only happens after a finals appearance, I question who the lazy one is.
If the team is on an upward trajectory or acquires a player I like, I generally feel good about it.

Given that Monahan also has a minor health risk attached, is a center, and has a bigger contract cap-wise, it just makes sense that he would be the roster piece that goes the other way to help balance the money.
I think the Flames would be able to stomach the 3.65 difference.

I'm not too worried about them getting rid of Gaudreau, Tkachuk, or Monahan if they need to.

Monahan would have to be a real team player to waive for Buffalo

It really depends on whether Buffalo cares about the roster player (being a tanking team) or will just accept any big salary back. Monahan is only a 2 year commitment, whereas Tkachuk is more expensive and then you are into a serious negotiation.
Monahan does have a 10 team LNTC and I’d imagine Buffalo is on it, so you’d have to do some arm twisting. Though Buffalo is close to home for him. Just 1.5 hour drive.

I'm pretty sure Monahan will recover. I wish I could say the same about Eichel.

Seems like he would be one of the easier ones to convince though as far as players that would have to waive, if we're honest.
Even though it wouldn't be fun, I don't see Sean as the difficult sort that would hold up a transaction.

If the ask is simply a salary dump of a very good but not great player like Andersson and 4 magic beans, two of which havemt even sprouted yet and the other 2 which are a year or two away (or more) from the NHL, you take that risk.
I think the ask is more, for Buffalo optics of nothing else.
If that's all it takes my guess is more than a few other teams would find a way to creativley create the space to get him.
Moberg has nothing more intel-wise than any other Flames or insider meida, and wasn't plugged in to the team (as real no media members are or have been except under the previous GM who used it to try and gain popularity).

I think it really depends on whether Buffalo needs a well known name to make the trade more palatable to fans. And on the Flames, Tkachuk is probably the most well known name to a casual fan. Maybe Gaudreau, but I don’t think he waives for Buffalo. After Tkachuk, it’s Monahan. Buffalo can point to multiple 20-30 goal seasons and say “see - we got a star back”.

Or yeah, as a poster pointed out above, you do it in two deals to make the money work.
Deal Monahan for futures (to a team he hasn't crossed off), deal the four futures for Eichel.

If Buffalo wants a first from both 22 and 23 do you still do it? I don’t know if I can give both up.

If the ask is only futures, I'd love to see something like:
To Buffalo: Valimaki, Zary, 2022 1st, 2023 1st (lower pick conditional on how many games Eichel plays in the first 2 seasons)
To Calgary: Eichel
+
To Ottawa: Monahan
To Calgary: Bernard-Docker and picks

And you think Monahan would just roll over go. You're also kidding or you're dreaming in technicolor.

Mangiapane
Wolf
Valimaki
Pelletier
Replace 1 with a 1st round pick if needed.
That's my guess if it happens. I had Kylington yesterday instead of Valimaki but this is high stakes poker. It's a big price no matter which way you slice it.
And I should be clear here. I dont think Eichel is the way to go but it really seems like this is gonna go down so may as well play along.

Yup, because the odds are neither of them will be as good as Eichel.

I already said I don’t know if he waives. I also noted that Buffalo is really really close to home for him. After Toronto, it’s the closest NHL team. And it’s just a 2 year commitment. He may also be told he’s on the wing here, versus centre there.
Or perhaps you just trade him to one of the teams not on his short LNTC list and get the assets needed to recoup the ones lost to Buffalo.
