FWIW to those who dislike the render, Dialog also designed the Library and it actually turned out nicer than the render with better detailing.

Snohetta out of Norway was actually the design architects while Dialog handled parts of the construction documents and CA locally.

there was an international competition for the Library design

Dialog did a very good job in executing the project however.

If the new arena ends up having a final capacity of 18,319 as reported, it will only be 28 fewer than Rogers Place.

It will be the 15th-largest capacity in the NHL -- slightly smaller than Pittsburgh and Edmonton, slightly larger than Columbus and LA.

Thanks, wasn't totally sure where Snohetta's work ended and Dialog's began, likewise with HOK/Dialog.

I guess, regardless, having Dialog involved gives me confidence in the final product.

oh, no worries.

a lot of big project have international design partners and team up with a local firm for the actual building/permitting.

Dialog did a heck of a job too though - the millworkers were impeccable.

I have friends that work at Dialog - but you can only design as well as your client's aspirations allow you to...keeping fingers crossed

Dialog has some really talented designers who focus on some pretty cutting edge stuff, but I suspect on bigger projects, they may not have a lot of input. In general, Dialog does very clean larger projects, but they tend to be a little less exciting.

On these types of large-scale projects, it's usually the design architect doing the heavy lifting at this stage; HOK is likely in the driver's seat right now.

That said, there's several local firms who could absolutely do this building with no 'starchitect' needed - and perhaps even better than what we're first seeing. The talent is here in the city. CMLC just has to have the balls to give them the chance... and that'll never happen, of course.

ironically HOK worked on both Little Ceasar's and the Rodgers Centre... so two completely different aesthetics...one more traditional and subtle and the other...well, not sure exactly what Rodgers Centre is...

so its really a question of context and what your client's expectations are

HOK Sport are not only the starchitects; they will be the experts in designing the actual stadium experience... They are a kind of 'insurance' policy based on actually have built these projects before... tough ask for an owner to select an architect to build a project if they never have built that typology... they'd have to engage a stadium specialist anyways...

For the guys above (oldschool, Mass_) or anyone who might know, I'm curious who makes certain design changes (specifically improvements) along the way (and, though I expect it's entirely specific to the project, why).

Looking at the Calgary Library here: https://competitions.org/2014/12/2014-12-22-23-36-52/

vs. the end result of the library, I noticed that the hexagonal facade was carried around the entire building in the end, wherein the render the south-facing side of the building doesn't have it and there is a more "standard" looking window treatment above the arch on the west side. There are also some other minor changes throughout,

I know this doesn't have a lot to do with the arena, I just know this render isn't going to be exactly what it looks like. And I know what happens when it goes the opposite way (where the render looks great while the building turns out like crap), but I'm curious how the library actually turned out better (in my opinion, obviously).

I haven't done much reading on the project, so I assumed (and was a little surprised) that Dialog was the design architect. HOK leading the charge is less surprising.
Yeah, it always frustrates me that almost all of the big projects in the city go to "outside" for designers.

The design architect would make those design choices, with a lot of input from the client. A lot of stuff can change from conceptual design to construction. Typically it's a process of editing back the original ambitious design to be more practical/buildable/affordable though.
