Vs. McDavid:


Tanev: 88:42 TOI, we outscored the Oilers 5-2 and out-possessed them confortably (62% xGF)
Tanev on the bench: 78:01 TOI, we got outscored 10-4 and out-possessed heavily (41% xGF)


For comparison,
Giordano: 65:42 TOI, we got outscored 4-3 and out-possessed heavily (41% xGF).


So yeah, Tanev played more against McDavid than any other D-man on the team and dominated that matchup.

Next part of the legend of the Flames greatness 2020/21 was that Andersson/Gio actually did the heavy lifting.

The Flames had a top-5 Defense d-man ON THE 2ND pairing.

He was great and better than the moderate expectations that he had when he was signed. With Zardov getting more than 3.2M it make Tanev's contract look better.

Who criticized Tanev? Most posters are saying he posted the best defensive stats , others are debating his overall value as an all round defenceman, the consensus seems to be that he was amazing last season.

Man, I’ve watched the Flames since inception and Tanev has to be one of the best defensive Dmen they’ve ever had. Reg was awesome but in a different style. Bob Murdoch right at the beginning.

This year, in the league, Slavin was in his league defensively, and arguably better. I can’t think of many others.

However hopefully next season, to boost his offensive numbers, he shoots more........from center ice
