If anything, Hyman who has a little more offense, should be going to Calgary.
Coleman, who is better defensively, should be going to Edmonton.
Maybe in a couple of years, they can be traded for each other.
Hyman doesn’t have a little more offence IMO. He scored more with bigger minutes, playing with elite linemates. In NJ, on a second line, Coleman put up very similar numbers. Coleman produces Hyman-like numbers with lesser linemates and could well pop with Mangiapane and Backlund (or with a healthy Monahan and, say, Dube, on a second line). He also is more versatile - he plays every forward position. And yes, better defensively.
He's above average weight though. He's built like a bowling ball, and his style is to push through taller lankier players.
I'm sure this has been posted before, but watch his highlight reel. Almost every goal is him driving the net, and typically through at least one d-man. Coleman is not a small player.

Yeah, as long as you are close to 6 feet, heft is more important.
I like this. I know Coleman played the wings in TB, but he's really a C. If we can shed Backlund's contract, then we're looking at:
Out: 32 year-old 3C with three more years @ $5,350,000 per
In: 29 year-old 3C with 6 more years @ $4,900,000 per
We get a 20 goal 3C who's still in his prime and save $450,00 off his fall-off years.
Huge mistake. I like Coleman, but he's not a center. He may be listed as one, but he hasn't been used as one in any meaningful way since 17-18 and absolutely cannot be counted on in the dot. He's genuinely not good at faceoffs.
He's a winger who can play the center role in spot duty. You can't replace Backlund with Coleman.
Also-ran organizations have no choice but to spend like this on depth players so par for the course. Stanley Cup contenders are not built this way but that's never been the goal for Flames ownership. Simply making the playoffs is the marching orders and Treliving has added a piece that will help his coach squeeze out a few more regular season games in the race for the bottom two playoff spots in the West. High fives all around in Flames headquarters today.

The point that contenders don't sign players like this to contracts... That is true. But what they do is trade 1st round picks and high end prospects for them at the trade deadline

We are not shedding Backlund's contract.
People need to understand what Sutter likes. He likes two way forwards, the two signings this Summer reinforce that. If Sutter could build a team with 12 Backlunds, he would.
Just be happy that he seems to be ok having Gaudreau on the team.
