I'm now in camp of go big on Eichel, at all costs. Clearly not going to rebuild since we're adding expensive veterans, so might as well blow our futures wad on an elite guy like Eichel.
No matter what there were posters just waiting to put the negative spin on this. So tiresome...
Let's be a little realistic here. This isn't some homerun, A+ signing. Most of the deals today will end up in buyouts and this one will likely be no different. He's a good player but he's not putting this team over the top or anything so it's totally fair for some fans to not share the opinion of those that think this is a great deal.
If this in fact true, Flames are gonna freaking love this guy. And so will Sutter, although I'm sure Flames would prefer preferential treatment of Coleman over Dwight King.
But yeah, he will instantly make the Flames better. I don't know who they'll pair him with, but he's perfect for Sutter's system, and he's exactly that extra piece the Flames need if they wanna make the playoffs and make some noise if they get there

In the last two shortened seasons he put up 31 pts in 55 games this year, and 31 in 57 with NJ b4 being dealt last season. Hit 20+ goals 2 of the last 3 yrs and was on pace for 20 this year also.
You’ll love him in Calgary. Dude plays with heart and is phenomenal on the defensive end.

I know we all love to laugh at UFA contracts but goddamn does pickles deserve this one. Plays with his heart on his sleeve and leaves everything on the ice every shift. Calgary got themselves a real gem and I’ll say he deserves every cent of his contract

I like to think Treliving and Sutter were talking about this and Tre says he wants the cap hit to be under $5 million and Sutter laughs and says "give him $4,999,995."

Lol
I still can’t believe Sutter pulled that hours before an arbitration hearing

Feels like people are underrating Coleman based on perception of him being a bottom-six guy. Like Backlund, this guy is defensively gifted and is firmly a middle-six player who will fit on the second line OR the third line depending on how they're deployed (and could play spot duty on the 1st, but won't provide the level of offence you might want from that role).
On an absolutely stacked Tampa team, Coleman was the 6th most deployed forward at even strength in the playoffs and the 3rd most deployed on the PK. In terms of shift counts, he was second, taking more shifts than Point and Kucherov.
During the regular season, he was 7th and 2nd respectively.
If you go back to the year previous with New Jersey, he was the 3rd most deployed forward at even strength and the 2nd most deployed on the PK.
This isn't a guy you're going to see much on the powerplay, but his usage elsewhere shows that calling him a "bottom six" guy doesn't do him justice... at all. On a stacked back-to-back championship team he might be a third liner... barely... but he's a guy you can absolutely trust (and absolutely has been trusted) right up the lineup.
This is a good acquisition. The term might not be great, but Coleman makes the Flames better immediately.

That HAS to be the play, right!?
I'm sure the Flames want to do that, but it seems like the Flames are going to instead rely on the underlying numbers for Gaudreau and Tkachuk improving once Sutter took over to continue.
I think we are expecting too much if we are anticipating a big trade at this point.
Coleman is a good player, but when you give him term and AAV like this, the negatives overshadow the positives.
Stanley Cup contenders don't give out contracts like this to middle six players.
Ideally you find a Blake Coleman before he comes a Blake Coleman and demands a $30 million contract.
This makes the Flames better, undoubtedly, but it probably doesn't move the needle much as a whole. The team missed the playoffs considerably last season and are no better this season. If anything, this contract just helps the Flames pick 14-18th overall next year.
I think they do.
