This. Complimentary players like Zadorov and Coleman have their place in a good team, but all these moves are pointless if they don't improve their top end offense

Well play style is one, Coleman one of the best two way wingers in the league the last few years

This franchise is why we are always a middlepack bunch. You look at all the teams that were successful in the past. You build a solid core, then add fillers like the Colemans.
We haven't even solidified our core yet and we're adding guys like this for big contracts. Freakin horrible, Tre sucks. I hate him.
|
Coleman's underlying numbers are actually good.
Brouwer was a trainwreck prior to signing with us.
I hated Troy Brouwer on the Flames more than anything. Least favourite player ever.
Coleman is nothing like Brouwer. This contract is also going to be bad towards the end, but I guess that's free agency.

Assuming such a deal is correct, he will be
30
31
32
33
34
35
during his contract.
Let's look at past anchor contracts and when they fell off:
Raymond - 29 (signed at 29)
Brouwer - 30 (signed at 31)
Neal - 31 (signed at 31)
Lucic - 29 (signed at 28)
Stajan - 32 (signed at 30)
Frolik - 31 (digned at 27)
Let's say Coleman bucks the trend and is effective to 32. That's another 3 years of term you need to buyout.
Signing a UFA who turns 30 this year isn't just risky, it's bound to backfire unless you can halve the term to 3 years.

Won’t judge this in isolation. Much more help is needed upfront to win now, so hoping we see bigger moves to solidify the forward core. In absence, it’s hard to understand this.

I want to believe you but this seems like an awful deal. Brouwer and Neal replacement contracts.

DB has him as a C, CF has him at LW/RW. In other words, he plays all 3 forward positions.
20 goal scorer when he gets 2nd line minutes. 14 goals in 55 games with only third line minutes in TB, playing with Goodrow and Gourde (with little or no power play time). I thought he had a strong PO as well.

Brouwers today are getting paid even more than back then.
4.9 is the equivalent of a $3M free agent at the time TB was signed.
And I believe Coleman is a much more impactful player that hurts you far less when he isn't making an impact.

The additions haven't been headliners, or sexy so far, but they are solid.
Coleman, Zadorov and Pitlick are all good skaters, and all play with an edge. Two things that the Flames HAD to improve on.
Add Sutter to the mix, and they are going to be much faster and harder to play against this year. Big improvement.
But we still need a good RW.

I do wonder if this could mean Gaudreau stays too...
IIRC Johnny, the Hayes bros (Jimmy broke this), and Gaudreau are all good friends.

I like the Coleman deal a lot more than the Zadorov deal.
