At the time, Dion was a bluechip prospect. Size, mobility, shot, mean streak. After his first three seasons, Dion was trending towards a HoF career. Then his ego got in the way and a bunch of injuries killed his mobility.
I think short of Crosby or Ovechkin, Phaneuf would have been an untouchable for Darryl over the first 3 years of his career in Calgary.

And I think we can all agree, that’s where he ####ed up.

I’m likely in the minority, but I think Pettersson is going to bust. He’s already trending down. Had a rough year, last year, while starting in the offensive zone 75% of the time. He has the talent to be a superstar, but I have a bad feeling about him.

So I’m guessing tomorrow is when we find out if there’s anything actually going on behind the curtain at flames headquarters.
I have a feeling there will be a few free agent announcements and a big trade.
Should be exciting.
Bet Treliving isn’t sleeping well this week. Busy time for the front offices.

Since the first day of free agency is usually just a laundry list of mistakes, it would be far better for the Flames if there wasn't a big headline.

I felt the same way about Quinn Hughes.
I think this year is important to both of them.

One issue with trading for Eichel is that the team will be significantly weaker for the duration that Eichel is out. He is going to cost some premium assets. In the most common trade scenario in this thread, it is Tkachuk + Zary + 1st (give or take some pieces).
This team minus Tkachuk until Eichel replaces him in the lineup is going to be significantly weaker - especially if another roster player is also on the move.
Yes, you can sign someone as a UFA to help back-fill, or graduate a prospect onto the team, but chances are that the Flames would be significantly weaker for that half season to full season that Eichel is expected to be on IR.
The one plus side is if the Flames manage to sign someone good enough, and Eichel is out for the entire season, you pulled-off a Tampa.
I wonder if he moves tomorrow amid all the free-agent frenzy.

^ it is rumoured Buffalo wants futures, not players.
I don’t think they’ll be acquiring a player like Tkachuk in this deal if the rumoured ask of four future pieces is correct.

Ryan Kennedy THN - I’m hearing the Buffalo ask for Eichel from Vegas is Smith, Peyton Krebs, Nic Hague and a first-rounder.
What would the Flames equivalent of this offer be?

Oh, I heard it was 2 young roster players, a top prospect, and a first. Maybe I heard wrong.

Mangiapane/Dube, Pelletier/Zary, Valimaki, 1st
The Flames first is arguably worth a little more than Vegas' (most likely). The rest of the pieces are debatable and depends on the combination to balance out.
Problem with this though is the cap, would need to shed $ elsewhere in another deal.
Personally I think this is one unproven piece too many for a guy we're not sure when he's back.

Dube + Zary + Valimaki + 1st feels like a better version of that deal. If that was what Vegas was looking for though, deal would probably already be done
Dube > Smith, since Dube is younger, cheaper, has upside.
Zary = Krebs probably
Valimaki > Hague
Our 1st > their 1st most likely.

Rielly Smith? That is more like Backlund than Mangiapane or Dube.

Moving Mangiapane seems like a non starter for me.

Buffalo doesn't want a ton of salary in the deal. So anything under Smiths 5m would probably work.

Agreed, was kind of viewing it "how would we beat that offer?"
But that's also why I said I wouldn't want to do it... Feels like too much.

That really doesn’t sound like much. If this is asking price the flames should be able to do it .
