Yes, I agree, and that's why I think Ovechkin is by far a better goal scorer than Gretzky. He's managed to score almost as many goals in an era where half the goals are scored per game.

I think there can be merit to era discussions- not so much that this era sucked or didn't suck, as in each case the guys playing were the worlds (or pre 1980 or so, Canada's) best but definitely goals per game fluctuates.


I get that their methodology would have flaws, but its fun to look at the adjusted goals that hockey reference calculates- here right now Ovechkin is 3rd , just behind Jagr, and Howe remains in first- I do like their list only because Jarome (not one of the best 100 players in the history of the game) Iginla sits at 7th. Gretzky 4, the Rocket 10


I also get that adjusted goals means jack squat. the record is Wayne's for good reason. Ovie also has a good chance to take it down and only then will be rightfully recognized as the goal scoring king

I dont think he breaks the record, but for growing the sport in the states I really hope he does break it or get close.
