Icon47 Capitals re-sign Ovechkin to a 5 year/47.5 M contract extension (9.5 M AAV)

Will retire a Capital.

https://www.tsn.ca/alex-ovechkin-was...tals-1.1673532

"The Washington Capitals have re-signed captain to a five-year, $47.5 million contract. Ovechkin, 35, will carry a cap hit of $9.5 million under the new deal. The Capitals captain tweeted "I’M BACK DC" on Tuesday, one day ahead of becoming an unrestricted free agent."

164 goals behind Gretzky. If he plays all 5 years on this contact he would need to average 33 goals a year to break the record.

This guy will be making $9.5M per year until he's 41.

What a beast.

5 years and 164 goals to go. Can he do it?

That's a crazy contract for his age.

He's amazing but thought he'd take like $7M just as a bit of a discount.

Hopefully he breaks Gretzky's goal record during this deal.

Needs to average ~33 goals/year over that deal to pass Gretzky, he just might be able to do it.

Crazy money for the age, but it's Ovechkin. Franchise would be irrelevant if not for him. What a career.

Guys, how many goals does he need per season to break Gretzky's record?

Given the lockouts, even if he gets to within 50 it'll be insanity.

2008 was his last contract, wow. Did we even have internet back then?

Good to see

I don’t think I’ve seen anyone love scoring goals (and when his teammates score, too) more than him

He's over 35, so the Caps wouldn't get any cap relief if Ovechkin retires before the end of the contract - and he'll be 40 for the entire last season of that contract.

Older players with contracts no longer retire. They just go on LTIR until their contracts expire.

I think the contract was tailor made for a run at the record. They probably asked him how long he wants to play for, and worked around that. I don't see him retiring.

He's going for it.

Let's say he does 40,40,30,30,25 he can get there and on the surface that looks doable to me.

He scored 24 in 45 this year, a half a goal per game.

Given the different eras they played in, there's no doubt in my mind that Ovechkin is a far better goal scorer than Gretzky. The Oilers averaged 6.2 goals scored per game from their first season in the NHL, 1979-80, until the season Gretzky was traded to the Kings, 1987-88.

The Capitals have averaged 3.1 goals per scored since Ovechkin made his debut for them. That's literally half the goals scored per game than the Oilers with Gretzky.

The fact that Ovechkin has scored even half the goals that Gretzky did is remarkable.

Oh here we go...its the 'Era' stuff.

I dont get it, go back and watch 70s and 80s hockey...its awful. Its like they found a bunch of unemployable hobos, gave them skates and then started a League as a tax dodge.

If I didn't know who this was I would assume it's a middle aged Russian dude with daughter, son, and parents. That's his wife though isn't it?
