Shame he could never recapture that rookie season magic with Jagr/Bennett. He had the one year where he scored some shorties but been a disaster at ES for years. If I were a GM I'd take a gamble on him as a winger though, alongside a Pageau type 3C.

Travis Yost proposes Marner to Buffalo for Rasmus Dahlin.
The Flames don’t have a young stud D-man to offer, but maybe a package of a signed Gaudreau with one of Anderson, Hanifin or Valimaki? Balanced as needed with picks
|
I would not trade Dahlin for Marner. TBH Marner has almost negative value at this point, despite the hype from Toronto media. About $4million overpaid and invisible in the playoffs.

A 24 year old with 67 points in 55 games does not have negative value.

Probably right, I mean since most players don't make the transition it's a pretty easy one. The curious thing is the one attribute you bring up with Phillips, is probably one where he's better than the comparable players you mentioned. Pretty easy assumption(which it sounds like it is) to say they aren't going to be stars.
Anyway, I just got the impression people would just like to see them before throwing them away, not expecting stars out of them.

I might consider Tkachuk and Valimaki for Marner and a defense prospect and I think the Leafs might go for that.
You've got a bit of a small top 6 but at least you have an elite playmaker on each line. Just over compensate with having a giant bottom six by signing Nick Ritchie as well.
Gaudreau Lindholm-Dube
Mangiapane-Monahan-Marner
Ritchie-Backlund-Pitlick
Lucic-Gawdin/Ruzicka-Ritchie

Wouldn't trade Tkachuk for Marner straight up and don't think the Leafs have a defense prospect as good as Valimaki. Sandin maybe but still not enough

Well he doesn't have negative value, but the Leafs would have to take a BIG contract back to move him. Personally, I think the Leafs would be a more well-rounded team if they could free up his $11million and take no salary back. Maybe only Seattle would do that.

The Tkachuk contract is a problem for me. Marner, while overpaid, would give the Flames at least a productive and certain long term asset.
Honestly, I think you could leave out the defensemen in this deal cause I think Tkachuk is exactly what the Leafs need.

I'd imagine if we offered Tkachuk $11million, he would re-sign here.

Puck flip derailed MT's season last year.
Puck flip derails MT entire career when he finds out he's going to play with Muzzin.

Wasn't the writing kind of on the wall when they hired Alex Burrows?

As we approach UFA here are some names that I'm interested in for the Flames. I'm mostly focusing on guys that are younger that fit the age group we have on this roster, that might be a bit cheaper than the top tier free agents.
Forwards:
Pius Suter: 25 Years Old - Had a great rookie season playing center ice on the Hawks with Toews and Dach out. Don't think his impact was all because of Kane though, his isolated metrics pass the test, and his underlying numbers away from Kane were good.
He looked like a top 6 center for Chicago last year and if you could get him for free while he's still only 25 that could be a steal. I think he'd be at the top of my list on Wednesday.
Alex Wennberg: 26 Years Old - A guy I wanted the Flames to take a look at last year after moving on from Columbus and he had a good season in Florida. Has some connections to the Flames as he's played with Lindholm, Markstrom, and Backlund for the Swedish national team.
Nick Ritchie: 25 Years Old - A guy that is still pretty young that the Flames have been rumored to be interested in going back to his draft year. With his brother on the team I could really see the Flames looking to unite the two of them.
Offensive D-Men
Mike Reilly: 27 years old - LH - Really had a breakout season last year and was strong for both Ottawa and Boston. A guy that if the price is right could help on the LH side for Calgary and take some of the offensive minutes.
Brandon Montour: 27 years old - RH - Montour was a guy that looked very promising when he was younger in Anaheim, then really just struggled in Buffalo. Looked a little better in Florida but would be a reclaimation project at this point IMO.
Defensive D-man
Jake McCabe: 27 Years Old -LH - Has strong underlying defensive metrics even though he's been on a terrible Buffalo team. Not going to provide a lot of offence but is a guy that can help defensively.

I would also take a long look into Kase from Boston as well. Another 25 year old, right shot, can skate, scored 20 in the past...

I'm starting to think the Flames won't do much in the way of a big trade but will probably sign a free agent or 2 and players that their current team didn't qualify. They're just going to stick with our current core group for another year. That's my prediction.
