He definitely fills a need for the team, but does not help them in terms of 1st line right Winger in my opinion.
High energy player, etc.....

If they miss on Eichel, trade Tkachuk and sign Landeskog.

The two teams are operating in completely different circumstances, though. It is much easier for Carolina to do what they are doing in relative anonymity compared to what the Flames are trying to accomplish under the glaring spotlight provided by media and fans. When even your facial expressions and body-language on draft-day become topics of intense interest, it is going to affect the results of your job performance.
Unfortunately, it is just much, much harder to build teams in hockey-mad, entitled and unreasonably unforgiving Canadian markets than almost anywhere in the US—especially the hockey-hinterland of Raleigh.

Does anyone happen to know what Elliotte's track record is for predicting free agent numbers?
Without looking anything up, my guess would be that his predictions are usually higher than what the player actually signs for because he'll be getting fed those numbers by the agents and the agents are trying to pump up their own clients.
So, if he's saying $5 million x 6 years (or $6 million x 5 years), should we assume the actually numbers will come in slightly lower?

He has been way over, several times.
I believe that he often uses agent info (which reflects the ask more than it does the market)

Gross. I understand that you need to entice free agents but yikes I would not be happy with term or pay. Taylor Hall deal would be a steal compared to this if Tre signs Coleman to anywhere close to the rumored deal.
I'd rather develop Zary or Pelletier and save our money. Better investment.

Lol, not even close to true. And Coleman is a secondary piece.

Who are you counting as "actual contenders"?

Vegas took a swing for the fences…. They are likely starting to exit their window.

Like Calgary. They have to get something done this year, or burn it down.

I would rather this team swings for the fences than continues to keep this stale lineup from the last few years. If it doesn't work then everyone gets their wish of a tear down rebuild once Sutters contract is done.

Chicago signed Hossa, which got them over the top.

With a franchise center, franchise winger, and bonafide top D pairing.
Flames are short on all fronts.

Yeah good point, I take back that it never happens. I guess the point I was making that the true contenders (ie Colorado, Tampa etc.) augment with secondary pieces and depth than growing their core with top tier players through free agency

Different tier of player, and different time in the hockey world.
Hossa's deal today would be like if Aleksander Barkov hit free agency and then signed a cap-circumventing 12-year contract...which can't happen, as those 12-year cap-circumventing deals don't exist anymore.

I would like this a lot, I believe we could get a really good haul for Tkachuk (although I don’t care much for what is being proposed from St. Louis).

Coleman would be a secondary piece, not part of the core.
