That’s closer, but I still think too much. Why do these contracts keep going up when the salary cap isn’t going up.
3 years 4 million, kind of around what Ferland got from the Canucks

He made $1.8 million last contract.
He would most likely be in our bottom 6. Potentially 2nd center if Backlund moves down to 3rd. He’s more or less another Backund.
Backlund makes $5.35. So the $4.75 probably isn’t far off.
If somehow they manage to grab Eichel. Lindholm is probably the ask. We’d have way too many centers.
Eichel, Lindholm, backlund, Coleman, Monahan None of these guys are 4th liners. It’s not working out??

Can't Coleman also play both LW and RW?
Maybe he's the latest crack at a RWer to play on the top line?

I see many people figuring he'll be a center if he comes to Calgary. Did he play center in NJ? I don't believe he did in TB

A 5 x 6 for a 30 year old 0.5 point per game winger?
Really?
Those are some expensive intangibles

Yeah we laugh at Hyman but then this news comes down. I think I’d rather have Hyman.

I actually think Coleman is better than Hyman, but that estimate is too high. I wonder where it comes from.

Hopefully this is just based on Friedman’s wild speculation and nothing more.
Because, woof.

If signing Blake Coleman to a contract like that is the best Treliving can do to find a first line RW, you might as well can him now and start the fire sale. That’s just sad.

It's because the salary cap actually did go up. The Salary cap stayed at 81.5M, but you added an additional team without adding new contracts. As a result you actually added something like $2.5M per team in cap space this season. Last season the GMs felt the cap squeeze, and the inability to make significant roster moves. This season it pushes them to enjoy the relative freedom, and into some bad decisions.

I’d way rather have Coleman and his two rings for six years instead of Hyman for 7 or 8.

I used to be a fanatic about all the big four, but salary escalation in the other ones made them unrelateable, and as a result, unwatchable. Paying that much cash for a middling player is insane. These guys are playing a children’s game and making way too much money. They have priced most people out of seeing them live. The NHL is killing itself with these silly salaries. It’s no longer fun to cheer for these guys as they have become nothing but commodities. Some people wonder why this board is so grumpy, well maybe it’s because this team and this league has become easy to dislike rather than easy to fall in love with?

Based on the temperature of the board, love is a strong word.

Love it in an abusive relationship sort of way? We all love the Flames, but the make up of the team? Again, temperature of board would seem to suggest otherwise.

Then just stop? Who is holding a gun to your head telling you to watch the NHL? Is it Jiri? He’s a loose cannon, I’m sorry.
Seriously, this is just the business side of the fun stuff (and for some, it’s also the fun stuff!). But nobody is forcing anybody to watch hockey. Nobody is forcing you to care, to buy tickets, to follow rumours, etc. And given that literally NOBODY is forcing you to be involved AT ALL… why bother if it isn’t fun and something you like?
I just don’t understand people with this mindset. “It’s easy to dislike” or “this franchise is disappointment after disappointment” or “everything is garbage and I hate it!” Just stop, go pick a new hobby, live your life. Or just admit it: some of you truly like being upset and being mad at something. You’d be lost without it.
A lot of people still love this league just fine. And they’re certainly not one overpaid middle six winger from that changing.

6x$5M or 5x$6M - I’ll eat the extra money to save the year.
Either way, better than Hyman for 7 at the same money,

I can’t believe it myself; but I have actually thanked PepsiFree’s post, because I agree with it 100%. This might be the first time ever.
