There’s also this...NCAA athletes can now get paid for appearances etc.

He didn't have to.
The teams that held his rights knew he wouldn't sign with them so they bit the bullet and traded him to make sure they got something instead of nothing.
If Carolina had decided to call his bluff and not traded him to his preferred destination he would have waited one more year.

Adam Fox was a 3rd round pick with bigger, more established players ahead of him.
A top-15 pick holding out for three or four years would be pretty unprecedented, especially given who we’ve played at RW the last seven years.
Coronato is going to play, and he’s going to play after a year at college.

Sadly we had that one camp with Saprykin, Tkachuk and Fata. Looked like so much promise
Saprykin was a decent player, Tkachuk got hurt or would have been just fine in my opinion. Fata a sketchy pick that did play many seasons.

I just don't worry about this at all.
If he doesn't want to sign here that would imply some leverage which means he's a top prospect and they can move him. Better that than drafting the safer player that you know will sign and have him either bust or only have a fourth line mucker upside.

There was Bennett and Janko I guess. With Hathaway it was sort of kid like.

For sure a few alarm bells with how the whole Fox saga unfolded, and him winning the Norris this year isn't helping, but........
This is pick is100% worth whatever risk there might be. How often do you get the chance to draft a player like this? Pure goal scorer with a 200 ft game and this kind of compete level? That's not a very common combination, especially outside of the Top 10.
I get the reservations, but I really like this pick.

My feelings as well.
Seems like the pick with the highest potential upside, and a position the team is desperately short at.

Fox was a good pick, Flames have to keep finding these gems it will work out. Sure some are disappointed, but it is good to know the Flames are finding the right targets. Lots to be excited about with this Coronato pick.

Flames should also stay away from WHL players lest they get rejected like with Stoll.

Well, I guess the good news is that if RW Matthew Coronado goes on to get his Harvard degree and then sign with NYI as a FA before winning a Norris in his second season... then a lot of people here will be able to say they told us so.

Fox didn’t bother to get a degree. Just told Carolina he wanted out and got to the destination he wanted all along.

I think he’s got 2 seasons at Harvard, maybe fills Backs role if we trade him around the deadline in a couple years

Matthew Coronato handled it well, people need to stop complaining so much about other people venting. Let mods handle it.

I wouldn't be surprised if Coronato himself was briefed and ready for the question when it came.

Looks like a good pick. But people don’t really think the kid saying he wants to play in Calgary means anything, do they? What was he going to say - “I’d prefer to play somewhere else”?
These kids are coached by their agents on exactly what to say in these interviews. Scramble the teams and the players drafted and every interview last night would have played out exactly the same.
“Hello… Springfield! Are you ready to rock?”
