There's definitely a lot of premature handwringing by some people here over something that likely has a real low chance of happening. That's a tough way to enjoy cheering for your hockey team.

I can’t say what my 20yr old university son is gonna do tomorrow. But you all know what this kid is gonna do in like 4 years. Good job. How do we not have more GMs on this site.

I think with Fox, he was also a few years away from being ready for the pro's, so by the time he had to make a decision, he was already close to the free agency "loophole".
For players that are ready to go pro sooner, it makes no sense to wait and lose a couple of years of earning potential.
Fox was a 3rd rounder for a reason. It wasn't his potential, but when he would likely realize it that was the reason.

Some people on this board are never going to be happy. You could easily argue a scoring RW is this organizations biggest weakness so we draft the top one in the draft and people are still unhappy. Unbelievable. Welcome Matthew and good luck!

It wasn't just Fox - Hickey did the same thing if I remember correctly (though he never made the NHL, but he seemed like a can't miss prospect).
Haynes is right - Coronato is not 4 years away from the NHL. I am not really worried.

Why? so they can become a starter for another team in 7 years or less.
Flames hung their hat on Markstrom for the next 5 years and in case you missed it they have a 2x WHL goalie of the year waiting in the wings. I wouldn't draft either of these guys in the 2nd round let alone at #12.

I mean, it's hard to boast a better resume than Wolf as an up and coming G prospect.
Why is Wallstedt a must draft for this team over a RS RW goal scorer, which we have none of coming down the pipeline?

It's not anxious fans who make picking American players less fun, it's the league rules that give us cause for said anxiety. Please direct your anger in the proper direction.

What is all that different about the league rules governing NCAA and CHL prospects, aside from the 4-year/2-year duration in their exclusive rights? No drafted prospect is obligated to sign. CHL guys can refuse to sign and re-enter the draft. I don't see a loophole.

Good pick, one of the better pure scorers in the draft. Real happy with this one

Markstrom won’t last 5 yrs and wolf is not a sure thing. He is a midget and Leland Irving had good stats too.
Not sure if I would pick them with a first but they would be definitely considered

If we look at our needs and what type of player we want this is 100% the right pick.
High motor, relentless work ethic and lethal shot. 100% approve the pick.

Yeah I can’t get over what a joke these rules are.
A team drafting a player should hold his ELC rights indefinitely. If it IS going to expire, the player should be re entering the draft. Only undrafted draft-eligible players should be UFAs.
This isn’t that hard.

The biggest difference is NCAA rules don't allow student athletes to make money, so they can't sign with their NHL teams and go back to their college team

Except it is. Some people enjoy being angry and bitter, they are a fan of the team struggling or failing so they have more to bitch about. If the team is successful he won't be here anymore because that would ruin his mood. Some people are just built that way, they thrive off of negativity. Unfortunately, the rest of us have to listen to their bs.

It won't. Did it shut up the people who say Johnny wants to play back home after he has said multiple times he wants to be here? The he won't sign crowd are going to beat that drum until he signs a contract...and even then they might still beat it.
