When you are desperate to "compete" (or whatever it is that we are doing is called), I think that's the sort of deal you make all day... I mean:

1) He might be your top 6 RW solution and will sign long term
2) He might get you some achievement in the field of excellence, in which case you consider this a price worth paying
3) If you fail to "compete" you should be able to flip him for similar or maybe more

The only real risk is injury, but that is always a risk with any asset. So, if you are where the Flames are, this seems an ideal situation...

Once in a while you need to take the bat off your shoulders.

If you lose him for nothing it would likely mean you went on a run and had a great season. There's far more positive or net neutral outcomes here than the potential for this type of deal to burn the team to the point where they've just donated a player and second round pick into the air.

And really, what exactly are we even doing if this isn't even a deal the GM should be making in some fans eyes?

Let's not go after game changing (or quite possibly franchise trajectory altering) players because we might have given up Dube and a second round pick for nothing (which ain't happening)? Even at the worst possible outcome this is hardly a franchise crippling happenstance.

What did highly-productive, 26-year-old Mark Stone go for again? Just curious.

Drance reported that it came down to the Canucks and Blues. Blues were willing to offer a roster player, Canucks were not.

I wonder what Calgary's pro scouts didn't like about him? Too big? Too skilled? Too Russian? Should have been in on this one. If he would sign an extension, then you move Dube and the pick, and I'm a big Dube supporter.

The one guy in Europe was already drunk and the one in North America is busy trying to find another Pitlick.

We've drafted a lot of russians recently. IMO it would really help to have a pro level russian on the team in place to help bring them in. Not only that, but he's big and talented and plays RW naturally... Who gives a rats ####### if he's lhs, Russians always play their off wings (Ovie plays LW even though he's a RHS.)
This one gets me a bit. Even if he is a longshot to resign it would have been worth the sniff.

I suppose the fact he's Russian makes his RFA negotiation just a little different.

You mean, Brannstrom and a late second (the other non NHLers are a wash).

No more getting older. I'd only do Dube+2nd if we moved Gaudreau for a 1st+Dube-type

Buch has been stapled to Zibanejad and Kreider for a long time. I don't doubt he'd be productive here, but there are no guarantees.

I don't know why, but I had a feeling Buchnevich would go to the Bliues, but I thought Tarasenko would be part of the deal.
