Philly paid way too much, that is indisputable. But if you just look at what they have on D, it makes for an interesting comparison.
Arizona:
OEL, Chychrun, Gostisbehere - $17.35M
Philly:
Provorov, Ellis, Ristolainen - $18.4M
For $1M more, Philly's D is SUBSTANTIALLY better. Very low bar, admittedly. But I guess they at least have that going for them.

Philly is having a brutal off season, so far they have sent out:
Patrick
Hagg
Ghostisbehere
Myers
1st round pick
2 2nd round picks
7th round pick
They have received:
Ellis
Ristolainen.
I would be pissed if this was the flames

Quite the risk by Philadelphia. They paid quite a lot for this big risk.
|
Yeah, he is only 26 after all, which is still very young for a defenseman. He should never have been 'the guy' in Buffalo at such a young age. I suspect he will look a lot better in Philly with a fresh start and no longer having to be a top pair guy.
But as you say, big price for the risk.

How can the Flames be so adamant that Risto is a bad player, yet multiple teams offered a 1st round pick for him AND he's going to be a UFA too.
Something doesn't add up.
This board is laughing at the deal because we all here think Risto sucks, but that's because we've been fed by the Flames that Risto sucks. Does he suck or are the Flames just wrong and we are wrong for buying what they were selling? It's hard to give the Flames the benefit of doubt when they have been a complete failure in player assessment, the results speak for themselves.

When did the Flames ever say this? Just one quote will do.

Burke said they were in trade talks for Risto before Snow came in from the analytical side and that killed the trade talks.
Also, I would bet that the "multiple" other GMs offering first round picks for Risto were not teams that have won championships or will win Championships anytime soon. There are lots of bad GMs out there who simplify the size aspect of the game to "size=good" when what they should be looking for is "good size=good"

Who knows, a change of scenery and lesser roll could be good for Ristolainen. Pretty clear Philly is all in this season.

I think this trade shows what Philly thinks of this draft (not much). Also, it is a 2nd in 2023, not next year. Those two things suggest they value next year's draft much more highly (no surprise). And presumably that this year's pick is of significantly less value.

Burke never hated analytics.
He hated it being used as the sole source of criticism for moves because he doesn't believe it's the only tool you should use to build a team.

If he "steals" info, he's posting it before the people he steals it from then...which I suppose is what all "insiders" do...?

He listens to every radio hit and podcast and takes the information. He also claimed Calgary was after Foligno at the deadline and not to expect any of the Seattle picks to get leaked before the show lol.
Also notice how he has never ever broken a trade? He throws so much mud at the wall that eventually some will stick.
