I’m always wary of these “role players that performed well on the stacked Stanley cup champions” new contracts. Usually doesn’t work out when they go to a weaker team and are given a bigger role.

Given that no actual insider has commented on this I am thinking this will not happen

How do they know this already? Tampa grant permission for him to talk to teams early?

I think Coleman is a beauty. That’s a very solid add in my mind. He will be another great add to the PK, and he will have at least 2 SH goals. I’m also pretty sure it means someone in the top 9 is on his way out. Now we just need to wait for term and money.

He seems to be a late bloomer. It looks like we went through two drafts and has steadily progressed while in the NHL.
Tampa Players by points per 60 minutes:
Stamkos: 2.939
Palat: 2.875
Point: 2.790
Colton: 2.272
Gourde: 2.259
Coleman: 2.187
Looks like he might've been a bit underrated.
Comparing to the Flames:
Gaudreau: 2.851
Lindholm: 2.531
Tkachuk: 2.538
Mangiapane: 2.057
Backlund: 2.021
Monahan: 1.900

Coleman had very strong results in New Jersey as well

21 goals in 57 games for NJ prior to being dealt to Tampa.
He's a very good player three zone player.

Probably.
With their cap situation they would have no way to re-sign either him or Goodrow.
Might as well try to recoup an asset if a team is willing to trade for his rights to sign him early.

I love this move if we sign him for less and for shorter than Hyman. Very similar players in my mind

If true, I really like the additions of Coleman and Pitlick with respect to changing up the chemistry of the forwards - starting to add more '2004 types'. Please keep that trend going!

I believe I read Tampa is happy to let teams talk to their UFA’s to get assets back in sign and trades.
This could be like the a Wideman signing where the Flames talked to him and got a deal done then traded a 5th to the Caps

Don't know if they are giving permission to talk to teams, but Lebrun tweeted this morning they are still shopping the rights to Savard and Coleman a la Goodrow.
If they were close to signing him, you would think a trade would occur.

Yup. Tampa GM sent a message out to all the other GM's that Coleman, Goodrow, and Savard were available to "jump the queue" on.

What's the cost? A sixth or seventh rounder?

Friedman has commented that a bunch of tampering has been going on this offseason. Not directly, but GMs will talk to an agent of a player and say they want a player that fits x parameters and make it obvious who they're talking about, gauge interest & figure out that way who they're going to sign.

I guess everyone is waiting on the Oilers to set the market on that with Hyman.
Treliving would be smart to get that done before Holland sends a 2nd round pick to the Leafs

Goodrow got a 7th, so in that ball park.
Might be slightly higher if multiple teams want that player.

Wasn't there a rumored failed deal or something a few years ago of the Flames trying to get Coleman from NJ?
