Some GMs run the position like they're glorified fans suddenly given the reigns to the roster.
Asinine just coming out of two seasons of massive losses and a flat cap.

Was it though?
I think there is a clear strategy from him.
Whether or not it gets executed is yet to be seen, but it;s there.
30M in cap space may be the single biggest weapon anyone in the league has to offer. More than any player or combination of players could return.
How is this for an example...
Knowing the Canucks are both a natural rival both geographically and division wise, and that they are in a serious cap crunch having to sign both Hughes and Petterson to large deals
What happens if he offer sheets Petterson to something like 7 years and 9M per year?
That puts serious pressure on Benning to match and then figure out how to ice a team moving forward.
If he doesnt match, then they get their franchise like C at age 22 for the better [art of the next decade, they seriously weaken their biggest rival and STILL have 20+ Million dollars to play with and recoup some of the lost draft picks.

So Francis' strategy is to begin a new round of salary escalation and a new arms war? The guy is a ####ing idiot.

How would it be salary escalation?
Right now Benning would love to lock down Petterson and/or Hughes to 3 year bridge deals at 7M....if you want to start eating into UFA years as this deal would...you have to pay.

Petterson is NOT a $9M a year player. He may get there, but not now. It's overpayment and then sets the stage for other RFAs to demand the same. All you do is set that ball rolling where guys with little long-term thinking let #### get out of control quickly. All it takes is one.

Lanny...that ship sailed when Marner and Matthews signed their deals.
Thats why the bridge deals are where they were/are at with the likes of Tkachuk etc.
Dubas let those dogs out long ago.

Yup, Dubas really screwed the pooch - for exceptional talent. Petterson isn't exceptional talent. Don't start the next level of escalation. Another salary reset is unlikely.

I doubt an expansion team wants to start out losing that many draft picks, especially for a player like Petterson.
Don’t get me wrong, Petterson is a gifted offensive player, but he’s not a Bergeron or a Toews type centre at both ends of the ice I would prepared to break the bank on and give up multiple draft picks for.
He’d be better off signing a couple of the premium UFA’s with his cap space than simply going out of his was to screw Vancouver. What goes around.

Again....he can make that deal, still have 21 M in cap space to take on other salaries with picks attached. I mean the Flyers gave AZ 2 picks to take on a 4.5M 2 year deal.
Cap space is, by far, the single most important thing a team has to offer right now, and with the flat cap, lost revenues of the last 2 seasons, and some serious cap crunches league wide, he can really set things up for now AND the future.
Will see if it works or what he does exactly, but his team is positioned really well already.

PPG after 3 years in the league
Petterson .76
Marner .76
But Petterson isn't worthy of 2M a year less?

I just don’t think that Petterson or Hughes for that matter are the guys I would try this with.
Not complete enough players.

I think this would be similar to what Montreal did for Aho a couple of years ago...

Fair enough, and it may be some other targets but there is no doubt that Francis has way more options available to him than maybe every other GM combined.
The one area he cant compete is player for player trades, but those are going to be scarce anyhow IMO.

I think the Canucks would match almost any realistic offer sheet for Pettersson. They certainly match 7x9. That would just force their hand on a couple of buyouts and/or trades they might have to make anyway (Virtanen and Holtby for sure, possibly Schmidt).
If you really wanted to screw the Canucks you'd sign him to a one year offer sheet just below max compensation. They'd still probably have to match but the ensuing QO would be devastating.

See, you've bought into it. That's why you can't continue the same bull#### mistakes. The slippery slope is established and there is not enough discipline in the system to prevent it from turning into an avalanche of stupidity.

It’s not that Petterson is worth 2M less. It’s that Marner is 4M overpaid.

Lanny...I (me) havent bought into anything.
But when i sit back and look at it both from the player/agent AND the GM angle, the barn door is open and if you want to keep your best young guys, you have to play on their field. Its how things have evolved. It started with Kevin Lowe and his asshat Penner offer and has been gaining momentum ever since. Then Dubas showed up and did the whole "hold my beer" thing.
I know you dont like what Francis did in the ED, but he has set himself up brilliantly to play that game moving forward IMO. Now he has to execute a couple things to make it pay off, but he certainly has all the weaponry to do so.
really thats all Im pointing out...and Im not even sure its the right way to go, but it was sure A way to go.
I have a feeling there is going to be pure chaos over the next little while...and its going to be both fascinating and fun to watch.
Tonight may end up a little anti-climatic but the next 10 days or so? I predict mayhem.
