When you lay out it out like this, the difference is staggering. Surely more moves to come for Seattle, but damn.

Daccord over Tierney (maybe Daccord will be good)

MacDermid over B Lemieux or AA (both have been traded for value in the last year) or D-prospect Kyle Clague

John Quenneville over Zadorov (traded for value last year)

Twarynski over Rubstov or Hagg or Braun

True might be fine, but Donato and Gambrell seem more intriguing

CBJ list was weak, but a team like CGY should've been looking for a guy like Stenlund (instead of Pitlick).

Tierney 1x3.5M is the only one that would take significant cap space. Zadorov is a pending RFA.

Zadorov is looking for $5M plus. And he’s not very good.

Francis also might have been aiming too high with the side deals if the rumored 1st + 3rd to not pick Gio is accurate. I think the Flames would have paid a 3rd, but not anything more than that.

Seattle would rather have Gio than a third round pick.

Do you think that Price, Vorachek, VRD, Tarasenko, Zadorov, and the like could have been moved for draft capital?

Presumably Francis asked and no one wanted to pay anything worthwhile. Who has the cap?

When a player like Ghost making $4.5M for two years requires a 2nd round pick+ to move, teams simply weren’t taking on cap. Or perhaps simply couldn’t.

While there is still some flips probably going to be made, the asset difference in the 2 expansion drafts is staggering.

Could Seattle be competitive in their first year? Yes but I doubt they have the assets to continually improve like Vegas did over the next few years.
Yeah, wow.

That is some deadly combination of other GMs learning from the Vegas draft and Francis not anticipating that they would learn and asking too much.

Good. I hope Seattle blows.

well, it would be a 3rd + Kylington or someone else.

I'd rather keep the 1st and 3rd, and so did Calgary

Francis was greedy, that is true.

But two things were strongly against him:

1) everyone learned from the first time, and they had time to prepare better for this one

2) the cap freeze due to Covid has made things tough for a lot of teams and has really dampened the market for big-name UFA types.

Their timing was horrible.

I think it would have been so much better if both teams entered the league at the same time, and had to draft their way through the available players. Would have been a much more fair way to go about it.

I think Francis is gonna try to go through his entire GM career without making a significant player-for-player trade.

You might be right. Still, you have to give him a mulligan up till yesterday. Tough to make a player-for-player trade when you don't have any players.

I think Francis is getting a bit of unfair criticism for how he handled this draft.

Even at the time, some of the trades that teams were making with Vegas were stupid. Columbus, Florida and Pittsburgh alone handed Vegas half their top 6, starting goalie, plus draft picks.

If Francis was leaving a 2nd round pick on the table to draft Bayreuther, then yes, he should be rightly criticized. But I don't think these Vegas style deals were available.

teams have certainly learned from the Vegas experience. Not only that, they also had a long time to prepare for this ... so the odds weren't exactly in Seattle's favour here. They were never going to get a similar haul as Vegas.

That being said, I do think Francis could have done a whole lot better. No side deals at all and only a single trade for a 4th round pick is pretty shocking. Ultimately I think he was just too greedy and overplayed his hand. If the rumours of him wanting a 1st and a 3rd for not picking certain players are true, then there's no wonder they went home with empty hands. Also, looking at trades like the Gostisbehere trade, that's opportunities wasted ... an expansion team should be all over deals like these.

How many teams would be lining up to trade a 2nd or a 3rd for Jake Bean? If you can't make a deal with a team for protection purposes, then take a player you know there will be interest in around the league. Brutal selections.
