Wait until they break their Hyman....
Alright. Had to be said, and now it shall never be said again.

McDavid could also be the one applying pressure and supporting these moves behind the scenes.
Hockey players are not necessarily good evaluators of other hockey players.

Then again, money makes people look past things pretty easily, possible he figures it will be fine and then just checks out. 8x8 for a player that soon regrets being there sounds like the standard E=NG contract.

Were this to be true, I'm not entirely certain who is the biggest idiot in the room.
I think I'd start with McDavid because he is basically still a child.
But you can go all the way up to Nicholson if you want. If you let Children make authoritative decisions for your franchise then there is a lot of blame to go around.

Judging from Lowe's GM days through the next three GM hires this still reeks of having Mr "I know a thing or two about winning's" hands all over it. He is Katz' trusted lapdog er' confidante.

Season after this one, a full NMC. But is that really a concern? He would only be traded if he wants out.

Ignoring contracts, the Oilers just got better. They added a proven top line player to play with McDavid/Drai. This makes them a better hockey team.
Hyman is the highest priced forward they could get, and they got him. Thats also a win for the Oilers. They needed to be competitive in the next 4 years to entice Mc/Drai to re-sign. Anything to increase the chances Mc/Drai re-sign is a huge win.
Years 4-7 of the contract might be bad value, but it's a good deal overall that makes sense given their contention window.

How does this improve the top line? Do they score more goals? Hard to imagine that. Do they defend better? He’s not a defensive liability but I’m not sure he’s a defensive conscience like, say Lindholm was on the Monahan line, or Bergeron between Pasternak and Marchand. Hyman is a gritty player but that grit is mainly in the offensive end - net driving, etc.

Holland is doing a press conference right now so probably no trade happening soon. Holland mentioned that they will probably buy out one player soon.

The problem is you cant simply ignore contracts, not in a flat cap era. By signing Hyman (not a player of greatest need) they hamstrung themselves even further in my opinion. Does he add to the offensive ability of the team, likely. Does he help them in grand scheme, I doubt it. I believe this was a foolish signing. So its great!

Everyone that has watched the oilers over the McDavid years has wondered when he’ll demand a trade out of that tire fire. Once he has his NMC, he’ll be able to control his destination so that he doesn’t end up in another tire fire like Buffalo… making it all the more enticing to let everyone know he wants out. It’s not like anyone would think of less of him if he did. I mean, how much is he expected to endure?

Yeah the top line gets better, but by how much?
Hyman is probably gonna be lights out playing with McAvi, but so was Alex Chaison, so was Kassian for a while, lots of guys have been.
Instead of paying some plug $2M to score 15-20 goals, you're now playing Hyman >$5 M to score 25-30 goals. Are those 10 goals worth $3M? Could you not get those goals elsewhere for cheaper, like say on your bottom 6 or your defense? Or maybe spend that money to prevent goals?
So yeah, Hyman makes their top line better. But, they've improved the one area that didn't need improving, and eaten up money that could be spent in areas that do need to be improved.

Really good player but I'm sure glad that we were out as we were rumoured to be in the mix for his services.

Take the offseason as a whole they are not better
D, goal tending, and bottom six were their weakness...and they are worse in all so far IMO

If the get a dman or resign Barrie and add Hyman yes they might be a better team. Problem with what they have done is if it doesn’t work out they are screwed and if it does work out what will things look like when Mcdavid needs to be resigned. Hyman will be mid 30s and nuge will be getting there too.
If they resign Barrie and get Hyman how will the resign nurse? The will need to buyout koskinen and Neal to do all this and resign yaomoto. They are using up their cap relief in koskinen to sign players this year which is making next summer tough. Bear in an Rfa too. The more they do now the harder it will be to keep it together and with Keith and smith they are on old team now
